Its exactly the circumstance Donald Trump tried to avoid. But Trumps own actions have made an FBI investigation into the president himself a reality.
Firing James Comey, the FBI director, was, by Trumps explanation, a way to stop a witch hunt against his teams alleged ties to Russia. It led, within weeks, to the appointment of a special prosecutor, Comeys FBI predecessor, Robert Mueller. And now Mueller is investigating Trump himself for possible obstruction of justiceby firing Comey, who had led the FBI inquiry.
With the crisis engulfing Trumps young presidency intensifying, senators, Trump aides, former prosecutors, and FBI veterans are sending the White House an urgent warning: Whatever you do, dont. Fire. Mueller.

Only Rodstein can fire Mueller so Trump would have to replace him with someone who would.

Why? Because he thinks he knows more than anyone else. He thinks he's a genius. He knows more than the generals. He knows more than the whole world!
Besides, nobody better tell him what to do. That alone will make him do it!
He's got the "best" instincts. He'll fire him. If he agreed not to, no matter. He'll do it.

Nixon caused two people to resign before he got the third to fire Archibald Cox, the special prosecutor. And that man's name was Robert Bork.
Never thought we'd see shades of Nixon again in my lifetime.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubris
"Hubris (/ˈhjuːbrɪs/, also hybris, from ancient Greek ὕβρις
describes a personality quality of extreme or foolish pride or dangerous overconfidence.[1] In its ancient Greek context, it typically describes behavior that defies the norms of behavior or challenges the gods, and which in turn brings about the downfall, or nemesis, of the perpetrator of hubris.
...........
In ancient Greek, hubris referred to actions that shamed and humiliated the victim for the pleasure or gratification of the abuser.[3] The term had a strong sexual connotation, and the shame reflected upon the perpetrator as well.[4]
.......
In Greek mythology, when a figure's hubris offends the pagan gods of ancient Greece, it is usually punished; examples of such hubristic, sinful humans include Icarus, Phaethon, Arachne, Salmoneus, Niobe, Cassiopeia, and Tereus.
.........
In its modern usage, hubris denotes overconfident pride combined with arrogance.[10] Hubris is often associated with a lack of humility. Sometimes a person's hubris is also associated with ignorance. The accusation of hubris often implies that suffering or punishment will follow, similar to the occasional pairing of hubris and nemesis in Greek mythology. The proverb "pride goeth (goes) before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall" (from the biblical Book of Proverbs, 16:18) is thought to sum up the modern use of hubris. ".....(more)
