(21,946 posts)As a rule, I don't turn on the t.v. until around 4 or 6 o'clock..since I watch MSNBC, the 5 o'clock slot filled with Greta makes me turn to the weather channel.
My day consists of updating my website which is a genealogical website devoted to putting on information for the county I live in. It's one of the best I might add.

(6,122 posts)If it conflicts with Rachel, I just hit record on the DVR so I can watch the movie at my convenience. Time shifting is a neat thing. Guess that shows my age....Neat. LOL

(11,389 posts)I don't like watching movies on my computer, so I connected my old laptop to my TV with an HDMI cord. Since my cable provider doesn't provide the HD version of TCM, this also lets me watch in HD!

(151,219 posts)I sometimes scan through channels that are near the FOX channel. By blocking Fox News, I don't see it at all, even if I'm just using the channel up or down button on my remote. It just gets skipped.
I wish I could block it on all TVs I encounter, frankly.

(6,122 posts)I think my TV would fall off the shelf if it ever got tuned to Fox. It KNOWS better. It is a smart TV so there probably is a way I can block it from even accidentally being tuned to it.

(12,344 posts)My retired inlaws watch Fox all day long, and it has turned their brains into mush. How do you keep your itchy fingers off the remote? How do I help them?

(15,381 posts)Figure out a way of nicely tell them they don't have to be watching the News all the time - tell them to remember when things were better off and people were more concerned about each other, the actual news was only on between 7 and 8 in the morning and 5 to 6 in the evening - there's still not that much news going on. If they need filler TV, HGTV or The Weather Channel are much better.
The constant repetition of the same "News" over and over turns everything into a Sports Event, which isn't right. And when there's no change 24 hour News makes situations seem more important than they really are and makes people more and more anxious and fearful. And you can't make a good decision of you're scared or angry, right?

(34,223 posts)I'm retired(disabled) and I have been for years.
I even have to limit my DU time, so I don't go into an abyss.
It can go both ways - too much left and too much right.
Encourage them to get involved in other activities beside TV.
Encourage them to get out of the house.
Encourage them to exercise etc.
If there are community centers, encourage them to get involved in that.
Do they have Netflix?
It may not change their political leanings, but cable news all day can cause obsessions and raise blood pressure etc.

(12,729 posts)I'm watching "Gunsmoke" The one thing normal or average about me is my shoe size. My size never goes on sale.
Edited to add: As I don't have cable or satellite TV service and limited data cap there is no way Faux Snooze will enter my home. And yes I am retired, white, male and at home.

(8,368 posts)Five years retired, and not once has Fox "news" been on at my house. It seems to perfect for the True Believers though - those neanderthals who were described so perfectly in Eric Hofer's book. Apologies to the earlier neanderthals.
