(60,435 posts)I was 11 years old, and my dad, who knew Pierre Salinger, JFK's press secretary, got JFK to inscribe this to me for my 11th birthday. Just in time. I lived to see my birthday the following year. JFK did not.

I still keep it in the original frame it was in when my dad gave it to me that day in March, 1963.

(60,435 posts)I have the usual photos of me and Clinton, me and Obama, and age 11, there wouldn't have been a whole hell of a lot I would have known to say to a president JFK anyway. But even so, not a hell of a lot normal mortals left that can boast one of these in their living room!
My dad and Bobby, Sr. got to be fairly close a few years later, but he never really got to know JFK. One of our family friends (and close colleague of my father), on the other hand, knew JFK really well, and I REALLY regret not pumping her for more stories. My brother and I used to go out to dinner with her at least twice a year right up until she passed away at age 93 (4 years ago). She was tiny, but terrorized all presidents from JFK to Obama at press briefings. Bush Jr. feared her more than he feared the Taliban.
That is so cool!

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
