Knives are out for theaters that bear the name Shakespeare

"The senders were outraged over the Public Theater’s controversial staging of “Julius Caesar,” a production in New York’s Central Park that has become a national flashpoint for its depiction of the stabbing assassination of its Trump-like title character.

But the e-mails went to the wrong place — Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Mass., one of several Shakespeare companies around the country that have been inundated with a flood of venomous e-mails, phone messages, and social media posts condemning them for the Central Park production.

The Lenox company has received roughly 40 such messages, including one that wished the theater “the worst possible life you could have and hope you all get sick and die.” At Shakespeare Dallas, executive and artistic director Raphael Parry says his company has received about 80 messages, including threats of rape, death, and wishes that the theater’s staff is “sent to ISIS to be killed with real knives.”

14. Actually, the original play focused on the chaos that resulted

after the assassination of Caesar. It was chiefly an anti-assassination play.

32. Oh, I'm familiar with Will, for many reasons.

Studied, taught, visited Stratford, attended plays, .....

But even though I've forgotten much (not joking), I think by showing Trump as Caesar this interpretation is NOT anti-assassination.

Shakespeare would have been, given the royal patronage.

Maybe this is why I see Trump more as a Macbeth, if one is being Shakespearean. Duncan could be interpreted as Obama, metaphorically, as Trump seeks to destroy his legacy.

has been produced in different formats, "modernized" interpretations, many times. So if you see Trump more as MacBeth, and the company were to produce it that way, don't you think that would be a cause for those who don't know various productions of art as well?

6. This is the funny.

I have some RW friends who were very upset over this play. The thought it was about Trump and not Shakespeare. Both on FB and in real life, the gaggle of wingers all expressed outrage. Until someone pointed out that it was the Bard of Avon's work. (Me). And told them the title (Julius Caesar) the plot etc of the play and that it is a anti assassination at its core.

All of a sudden their outrage subsided. Bunchadumbfucks.

of such misdirected protests. In the play, there's a scene where an angry mob comes across an innocent bystander who has the same name as one of the assassins. He tries to explain that he's not one of the conspirators, but the mob kills him anyway. A perfect depiction of Trumpette thinking from 400 years ago.

It's surprising that this has become so deeply offensive to Delta Airlines, considering that in 2012, Delta sponsored a season in Minneapolis in which the Guthrie Theatre staged a 'Julius Caesar' which featured the killing of an Obama-like figure.
