I wrote a silly post this morning that got a lot of recs.
But it's just silly. Here's one that counts (no not one of mine!), about a man beaten to death by the Army of the 1% because... well, seemingly because he was a nuisance. I ask you to read and consider rec-ing it:
Now, You See My Fists?
Because you're next. There's nobody in power interested in protecting you.
We've all read Martin Niemöller's words:
First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
These words aren't mere history - they are also our destiny, unless we act quickly and decisively.

(3,068 posts)I think we already know we have to act quickly and decisively. What should we do? March in the streets? Complain to our Congressman? I wish there was one, simple solution.
I have many Republican friends and family members who spout all the Fox News talking points. The way I act is to call them on the bullshit and present facts to back up my argument. They usually just sit there and shake their heads at me but I can see the wheels turning in their minds.

Certainly confronting the idiocy with facts is useful, but I think that, in large measure, the right wing is rather impervious to facts that don't support their preconceived notions. Once in a while, though, you do manage to crack the denial. We know that sometimes people abandon their right-wing ideologies in favor of more humane perspectives.
If you aren't familiar with the writings of George Lakoff (The Political Mind), Drew Westen (The Political Brain) and Daniel Kahneman (Thinking: Fast and Slow), that would be a good place to start. You can get the gist of their ideas by scanning relevant articles in Wikipedia, which will help generate some ideas about changing beliefs, attitudes, etc.

Hindsight is no replacement for foresight, but remains far better than the blindness many choose.
