No it was not an inexcusable loss, and this was always going to be very hard and everyone knew it. Let's not kid ourselves.
This is a deep red district where the R won in November by 23 points. McCain and Romney both won by LARGE margins in this district. It has been held by the R's since 1978, nearly 30 years. An 18 point shift is great news in a very real sense, as are all the deep red districts where R's have now found themselves having to spend many millions and actually have to fight for them. None of these should have been this close. We are doing the right thing with a 50 state strategy and strongly contesting even these deep red seats, win or lose.
It is easy to be disappointed even though we got much closer in the these races but were not quite able to win. That's natural. But please, understand that pesky little thing called math. When they have a huge registration advantage, tons of outside dark money, and long traditions of winning these seats, then it is very tough to flip them. Cutting their margins down substantially is real progress. Just imagine what will happen with this continued effort in 2018 to seats R's won in districts that Clinton actually won or which they won by ten points or less?
Always see the BIG picture.

(53,771 posts)Ossoff, came so close, within 2 percentage points of winning that seat outright but our party apparatus didn't seem to grasp the importance of that earlier election and didn't get behind Ossoff then.
Seems if the Dems had poured all out effort into the earlier contest there would've have had to be a run-off against Handel where the repugs could pour all the millions of dark money and and all their dirty CrossCheck and hacking tricks into it.
Boy do we need someone in place nationally who is paying attention and who gets this stuff and is a step or two ahead of the repugs so opportunities like this don't slip through our fingers.
Like where is our strong, concerted and well publicized effort to combat repug cheating? We know they are going to do it. We've know since 2000 that they cheat in anyway they can and now with Citizens United and dark money they can cheat even worse yet our national organization has not come out strongly in doing something about it.
Why?
Bring back Howard Dean and his 50 states strategy or something. I'm so tired of always being the victim reacting to repug tricks instead of being proactive to combat their tricks.

(5,586 posts)We're not going to have the resources to invest a second time in 2018 when the entire congress is up for reelection.
I'll say it again, I live in GA district 6, and if we want to win back the house, we will need to flip districts like this one.

If ever there was an opportunity, this was it.
