By Mark Lippman
After the special elections in Georgia and South Carolina, its time for the Republicans to panic. The explanation is simple. Two words. Speaker Pelosi.
Both House seats were deep in the red. The Montana and Kansas seats were, too. For Republicans, there can be no comfort in knowing that the Democrats didnt flip any of the seats from red to blue. The trend to blue is undeniable and if it holds, or even if it weakens slightly, a slew of swing districts will move into the Democratic column in the midterm election.
A Democratic House majority would make Trump, or any other Republican, a lame Duck for the rest of his term. The idea of Paul Ryan handing the gavel back to Nancy Pelosi must be driving the Republicans to the edge. The Committee Chairs would pass to the Democrats as well.
Thats why you see a sudden outburst of emotion about Pelosi. She was always a favorite obsession of Right-wingers. Compare the legislation that the House passed by this date in 2009 with the current session. Pelosi gets the job done.
What the Republicans need is a compelling campaign theme for 2018. For now, at least, it seems like Pelosis age is it for them. It should be common sense that this isnt a good look. It wasnt four years ago and it isnt now.

(928 posts)Nancy Pelosi gets the job done. I don't agree with some of her positions, but she's not my representative. As far as having her in the drivers seat, we should all be 100% behind her. She's one of the few "old guard" we need to keep around for as long as she's able.

As another poster said, she's not my rep and I don't always agree with her (Or anybody else for that matter) but she's world class at what she does and I am glad to be on her side.

(62,270 posts)This is the modus oprendi of the ratfucking right wing. The are trying to pull a wedge, choose deep red seats that were nigh impossible to flip (especially in special elections), which closed the gap by a huge percentage.
But for Democrats it's not good enough, it's either win or be eradicated.

(109 posts)Until the Dems address and do something about the underlying problem (rigged voting machines and voter suppression), they shouldn't expect anything to change. There'll be a few races that Dems will be allowed to win but overall nothing significant will change at all. We do not now have and haven't had for well over a decade now any trace of a democracy. It's no longer on life support. It's dead and buried. Get used to it.

(7,178 posts)Read yesterday that 1st thing Pelosi gonna do in 2018 is introduce two voting rights bills:
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, while calling on her GOP colleagues to make it a bipartisan measure, said the bill "will be introduced on the very first day" Democrats regain control of the House in 2018.

(6 posts)If the democrats win the house in 2018 they need someone new to be the speaker of the house. Nancy Pelosi already had her chance and she's too much of a corporatist democrat. The Democratic Party needs to move to the progressive wing. People are tired of establishment politics. I'd say someone like Elijah Cummings or Tim Ryan would be a good speaker of the house. They both have many progressive creditals.

(10,136 posts)Representative from CA-14 (which I miss being in by a mile or so). Relatively new as a representative, but long experience in many areas of federal, state and local government, starting out as an aide to Congressman Leon Ryan (she was shot and seriously wounded at Jonestown). The GOP will hate her, of course, and not just because her district includes part of San Francisco.
