"Just out: The Obama Administration knew far in advance of November 8th about election meddling by Russia. Did nothing about it. WHY?"

Obamas secret struggle to punish Russia for Putins election assault
The White House debated various options to punish Russia, but facing obstacles and potential risks, it ultimately failed to exact a heavy toll on the Kremlin for its election meddling.

(816 posts)Without Trump supports going crazy. Also keep in mind what McConnell threaten the gang of eight he would do.... He said if this got out as to how Russia was affecting the election he would make it a partisan scam .

(816 posts)At the very least. After all the articles I have read WaPo New York Times stuff My tinfoil hat believe when everything comes out and shut hits the fan we might see the end of the Republican party. Too many Republicans have ties to Russian money. I believe the RNC was hacked with the DNC but instead of giving it to wikileaks it is being used to blackmail some republican to go along. I personally believe McConnell & Ryan completely had knowledge of all this and allowed it to happen. The Republican party basically attempted a coup.
Now I believed our fellow Republican citizens would find this traitorous and stop supporting Trump and Republicans but as many have showed me I am sincerely losing faith I my fellow citizens.

(17,984 posts)Or some sort of alternative fact fabrication: "He meant that, if Obama thought there was Russian meddling, he should have said something. So we take Obama's silence to mean there was nothing all along".
Note: I am well aware that Obama did say something and was shot down by McConnell. That part of the broader story will be conveniently left out of this narrative as it unfolds next week.

(7,300 posts)I give him the daily briefing and when I told him about this story he sat silent for a moment and then said, "You mean to tell me the whole GOPee leadership is complicit? And committee members? And the Sec's of States? If Mueller's team is half as good as they say, more people are on heir way to prison than in Watergate. Holy shit.".

(7,300 posts)Do what about a fake story? The IC is wrong. The GOPee didn't believe them. The states' Sec of States ignored them. Shit Gibbon says it everyday. Witch hunt. Fake news. Which is it?

(967 posts)at the expense of our candidate? The information was readily available. We knew about it. Media knew about it. If you were even a little informed, it was available.

(21,024 posts)but we chose not to use it. I don't understand the thinking that went into that decision. Were we concerned about offending Republican sensibilities? Was it squelched in consultation with the Clinton campaign? This comes under the heading of "defending American Democracy" in my view and our response was weak and confused. I'm angry and disappointed.

(92,115 posts)First let's get the facts straight instead of a pseudo press secretary bot. The Washington Post had a story on this, this morning, which I have summarized below, with the appropriate link.
There is speculation involved in that Washington Post story also. In addition, there seems to be a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking going on, with a lot of interests looking to play the blame game with the intent to distract and divide.
In my view the public had a right to know about the Russian involvement before the election. It may or may not have changed anything, but it was their right to know
Both President Obama and McConnell were informed of this by the intelligence community. That is a fact. I suspect that the FBI and intelligence community told all parties not to say anything publicly because it would hurt the ongoing investigation. That is my speculation, but unless and until we hear from the principals, we won't have the full facts.
I am not surprised that a lot of sources are using President Obama as a scape goat on this. It is well known that elements from both the left and right hated President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. I don't use the word "hate" lightly. I also find it curious that there are attacks being instigated against Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic party.
I do NOT believe in coincidences.
The question that needs to be answered is why didn't President Obama or the Congress tell the public?
Harry Reid alluded to it. John Lewis alluded to it and so do others. Why didn't anyone come forward then?
I asked that question when Harry Reid spoke to it in September 2016 here on DU. Of course no one could answer that.
All these attacks suddenly against the DEMOCRATS when the Russian investigation seems to be getting closer to the trump administration should make people wonder why?
Here is the WashingtonPost story:
"Obamas secret struggle to punish Russia for Putins election assault
"In political terms, Russias interference was the crime of the century. It was a case that took almost no time to solve and was traced to Russian President Vladimir Putin. But because of the ways President Barack Obama and President Trump handled it, the Kremlin has yet to face severe consequences. Through interviews with more than three dozen current and former U.S. officials, The Post tells the inside story of how the Obama administration handled the Kremlins meddling in the 2016 U.S. election."
REVELATIONS:
1. Stunning intelligence: U.S. intelligence agencies had sourcing deep inside the Russian government capturing Vladimir Putins direct instructions to damage Hillary Clintons chances of winning and help elect Donald Trump.
2. Covert retaliatory options: President Barack Obama set in motion a secret program that deployed implants in Russian networks digital bombs that could be triggered in a retaliatory cyber-strike.
3. Menu of responses: The White House debated dozens of options against Russia: economic sanctions, cyberattacks and releasing sensitive information on Putin. What was proposed was much more severe than what was eventually implemented.
4. Push for a probe: Secretary of State John Kerry proposed creating a bipartisan commission to investigate Russian interference and protect future elections. Obama and senior officials killed the idea.
5. Brazen harassment: In one previously undisclosed incident last year, a Russian military helicopter dropped down to make multiple passes just over the hood of a vehicle being driven by the U.S. defense attache in northern Russia.
6. Toiling in the dark: Lower-level officials were kept in the dark. A video feed from the Situation Room was shut off a measure that had not happened since the run-up to the 2011 raid on Osama bin Ladens compound.
7. The tabledrop: Obama and his senior aides were worried any action would be depicted as political interference in an already volatile campaign.
8. Warnings to the Kremlin: Obama told Putin in China at Septembers Group of 20 summit that we knew what he was doing and better stop or else, said a senior aide who subsequently spoke with Obama.
9. Russians expelled: Alleged spies expelled as part of U.S. sanctions against Russia included several who were suspected of helping the election interference operation from within the United States, officials said.
10. Agency differences: Agencies were slow to endorse the conclusion that Putin wanted to damage Clinton and help elect Trump. The NSA was reluctant because some of the CIAs most critical technical intelligence on Russia came from another country, officials said.
THE REPORT:
"Inside was an intelligence bombshell, a report drawn from sourcing deep inside the Russian government that detailed Russian President Vladimir Putins direct involvement in a cyber campaign to disrupt and discredit the U.S. presidential race.
But it went further. The intelligence captured Putins specific instructions on the operations audacious objectives defeat or at least damage the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, and help elect her opponent, Donald Trump.
At that point, the outlines of the Russian assault on the U.S. election were increasingly apparent. Hackers with ties to Russian intelligence services had been rummaging through Democratic Party computer networks, as well as some Republican systems, for more than a year. In July, the FBI had opened an investigation of contacts between Russian officials and Trump associates. And on July 22, nearly 20,000 emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee were dumped online by WikiLeaks."

Some of the Washington Post story, includes speculation. What is know is that the intelligence community informed the President and Congress of the Russian involvement.
Here is my take on this story:

If the Retugs pulled this off - why you think they'll ever give up power? And they surely aren't passing legislation that's going to win them new voters.
Why aren't people SCREAMING. Obama knew, members of Congress KNOW. What are we DOING?

Granted, what BLOTUS tweeted is bullshit but he is the one that deserves ire, not the OP.
I don't follow BLOTUS on twitter. I just can't. I do follow this bot though. I also follow a bot that posts a small video of a robot that prints out the president's tweets and then burns the printout.
