Coke declined to comment.
It's a significant development as both Coke and Pepsi try to find ways to grow their share of the carbonated sector, which has seen its volume numbers drop from their peak in the 1990s. Dew, which was created in Tennessee, has elbowed its way into the Georgia finish by being a strong regional drink, experts said.

Unfortunately, the old Mountain Dew can had a cartoon hillbilly with a jug of moonshine which, to my eyes, made the "throwback" label sort of comical.

It's a stereotype rooted in a terrible fact. Central Appalachia is No. 1 in the nation in toothlessness. According to dentists, one of the main culprits is Mountain Dew soda. With 50 percent more caffeine than Coke or Pepsi, Mountain Dew seems to be used as a kind of anti-depressant for children in the hills.

(5,477 posts)Saying that my take on this is "class prejudice" is utterly laughable. You have to make a lot of assumptions to arrive at a conclusion like yours. My lineage is straight out of the delta and gulf coast, and I'm far from pedigreed.
Since you're so sure that people who think differently from you on this subject are prejudiced and engaging in stereotyping, maybe you'll tell me something. What do we bigots have to gain from it?

poor people are more likely to lose teeth than non-poor people. lots of reasons. mountain dew is irrelevant; starches that stick to the teeth (like white bread) more likely to cause tooth decay, & poor nutrition and lack of dental care the basic reasons.

I know, I know, woefully unhealty sugary HFCS infested yada yada yada....
But Mello Yello was a symbol of my childhood. They didn't have it in the Mid Atlantic, but they had it in the South, so whenever my family would drive down to Florida ever summer and drive through the South, the Mello Yello was a common place drink.
On the other hand Mountain Dew was ubiquitious, and I actually prefer the taste of Mello Yello anyways, health consequences be damned. (Although supposedly there is a Mello Yello Zero out there, but I've yet to see it in person.)

My best friend from high school's dad ran a convenience store. Little town on the outskirts of the county, populations about 400. The kind of country store where you could open up a charge account (which was one reason he was able to hold out when the corporate dollar stores came to town).
Anyway, all the "Deliverance" looking people would come down from the hills and buy their groceries there. Natty Ice beer, Little Debbie cakes, potted meat, wonder bread, ice cream, and Mountain Dew. I don't see how those people lived on that junk, but they did lol.

For some reason Simba didn't catch on, but I think it came out in response to Mountain Dew and that it had a similar taste. Could it be that southerners like Mountain Dew because of the hillbilly-sounding name and the way it's marketed, with hillbillies saying "Yahoo, Mountain Dew" and playing bluegrass music? Simba was always advertised showing images of grasslands in Africa and prides of lions. "Simba, it goes for your throat" was the marketing line. "Simba" I believe is the Swahili word for "lion".

In Mountain Dew, brominated vegetable oil is listed next-to-last, between disodium EDTA and Yellow 5. These are just a sampling of drinks with BVO listed in their ingredients, which is required by the FDA.
The most popular sodas Coca-Cola and Pepsi do not contain BVO."
article goes on to say it is "used in some citrus-based beverages," said Christopher Gindlesperger of the American Beverage Association, which represents PepsiCo, maker of Mountain Dew

(41,938 posts)BVO functions as an emulsifier, forming cloudy emulsions or suspensions of oil in water. The cloudiness makes it look more like natural fruit juice, even if there's nothing natural in it.
