I think most parents try to indoctrinate their children with the same values, including political values, as themselves. Of course, if these children think for themselves as they get older, this doesn't always turn out as planned - which might explain why I voted for Michael Dukakis two years after registering as a Republican in my senior year at a Catholic high school.
But I do try to educate my daughter a bit, occasionally showing her things I find on sites like Democratic Underground. She is 17, and has been raised mainly by me (her dad) since the age of 2.
So a couple days ago I saw this ("Wisconsin Lawmaker Introduces Law To Classify Single Parenthood As Child Abuse"
and just had to show her. She got a "WTF" look on her face.. well, ok, she actually said the words. At that point, all I had to do was shrug, shake my head, and say, "Well, that's Republicans for ya!"
Somehow I don't think she'll be joining College Republicans anytime soon.
Thanks, Glenn Grothman!

(6,130 posts)libertarian computer geeks, and half of them will evaporate once the RNC makes all Paul's delegates swear a loyalty oath to Mitt Romney.
The Turdblossom Genius, Karl Rove made a serious strategic blunder when he decided to reach over to the far right, and rake in as many scumbag racist votes for the GOP as he possibly could. Now they have no choice but to double down on the angry old white people vote, at the expense of every other demographic.
At the moment here's how everybody else sees the GOP:
African Americans see the GOP as one giant 'Stand Your Ground' gun law, chasing Eric Holder around with a subpoena.
Latinos think the GOP wants to put them all in PINK UNDERWEAR and throw them in an Arizona tent until they can be put on a train back to Mexico, whether they actually came from Mexico or not.
Young people see the GOP as the party that wants to double their student loan payments, and forbid them from having sex.
Women see the GOP as one big Vaginal Ultrasound probe.
At the moment, by doing this they've succeeded in ringing every last ounce of racist, angry white old man voter enthusiasm out of their one and only demographic, and it MIGHT be enough to win a couple more election cycles. But the long term damage has been done. They've lost these other groups for a generation. The Latino alienation is a particular problem for them, since it puts states like Texas, New Mexico and a few others back into play again as a swing states.

They are all skin-heads, and the churches in the rural south are all teaching republican "values": greed, gay hatred, liberal hatred, Obama hatred... etc. Plus, the kids around here like the adrenalin involved in talking up guns....it goes with pick-ups with big wheels. They are well-programmed.

(3,041 posts)can it be very long before they start trying to raise the minimum voting age? (Or has that already happened and I missed it?) .. Edit: nvm, answered my own question. Googled "raise minimum voting age" - and of course a wingnut proposed it in 2004, after the nation narrowly avoided disaster

(6,130 posts)The whole "if THEY won, they MUST have 'cheated'" theme has been growing in the Republican base ever since Clinton won the 1992 election and the Gingrich Republicans went after him with all means, fair or unfair. It was an attitude that could only be justified with the rationalization that Clinton wasn't a 'legitimate' President. It's been like that ever since.
A black liberal Democrat with a Muslim name COULDN'T have won a Presidential Election LETITIMATELY. Therefore:
1. ACORN must have cheated.
2. Illegal 'beaners' who aren't real citizens must have voted.
3. Maybe the almighty Founders didn't really INTEND for all these (insert whatever 'type' of ppl vote Dem.) to vote.
4. Okay...even IF more people DID vote for him, and even IF they were all eligible, he wasn't eligible TO RUN in the first place, because...because...okay, give me a minute...

When Republicans talk about "single parents" it's about "welfare moms" and not white ones.
The racist base in the Republican party is all for the idea of charging black women with a crime and locking them up so they can't vote and can't breed more Obama voters.
