WASHINGTON (AP) The Trump White House no habla español. Well, un poquito.
After a succession of administrations that embraced Spanish-language content, President Donald Trumps White House is all but ignoring Spanish speakers even though he has a robust online presence in English.
His administration has yet to offer a Spanish White House website. It has eliminated the position of director of Hispanic media outreach. And its Spanish-language Twitter account is heavy with English text and features sloppy translations.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer said in January that the administration had its IT folks working overtime to roll out a new Spanish language site after WhiteHouse.gov/espanol went dark in the hours after Trump took office.

(35,323 posts)It was my major. People have trouble using my phone because it's in Russian. Siri does truly strange things with American place names. (Czech's cool, too. No gripes with Polish or Bulgarian. Don't do much Ukrainian, but having the government sites duped in Ukr would be a nice sign of solidarity with an oppressed people, quondam et not doubt futurus.)
About 40 million people use Spanish at home.
A bit over 3 million use Chinese. Almost 2 million, Tagalog.
A tad less than 1 million use Russian. Rather more use Arabic.
I know political reasons for preferring services in Spanish over Arabic or Russian. I know budgetary reasons. I don't know any principled humanitarian reason. Esp. given that relative computer literacy among the different groups would force us to weight those averages.
Some work on language shift shows it's generational, in part, but also driven by need and use by context. German was squashed when it became unpopular and things in German stopped being available. Russian spread by the same means.

(118,309 posts)Already the results are so fantastic
The Hispanic people love me. Because nobody had ever done anything like this before. That's how I became popular in Mexico. Go ask anybody. Ask in Novosibirsk. Or in Omsk. Or in Volvograd, where they make the cars.
Got the idea from my very close friend. Juan. Or Pedro. I think it's Juan. But it might be Pedro. I call him Juan
Works in the Taco Bowl.
I went in and said -- Juan. Or Pedro. I want to reach out to my many good Hispanic friends
And Juan. Or Pedro. Or whoever said -- You want to reach out to Hispanics? Really? You always tell us, 'Come mierda y muerte'
So that's where the program came from. And as I said, the results are fantastic"
