1. i add when Dems eventually control congress,they should aim to reduce the pardon powers

from the Presidency. It needs to go or at least be limited.

6. As with many such changes, that would require a Constitutional Amendment.

Those are not easily accomplished as the Equal Rights Amendment illustrates. Powers granted to branches of federal government in the Constitution are very difficult to change, and that's by design. The Congress cannot simply change them.

7. The most severe problem with the pardon as I currently see it is

The president should not be able to pardon an acquaintance. The reasoning is the same as recusing oneself in similar situations.

The President does have this power. And you can bet Trump will use it, but there is zero chance it remains secret IMO.
