14. I witnessed an eclipse back in the 80s that happened around mid-day, as I recall.

I was in school at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. Walking across campus as it got darker and dimmer was downright spooky. It almost felt like my eyesight was fading away and that truly was frightening. The other thing that stood out was the colors of everything began to flatten out to a dull shade. The blue of the sky and the green leaves all became muted during the eclipse and then gradually regained their normal hue as the light returned to normal.

I can understand how ancient people were frightened by a solar eclipse just given how perculiar things look during that event. I don't know how much I'll be able to witness the one in August living along the Northern Gulf Coast but I hope I can see some of it! 🌞

31. Over forty years ago

Mid 70s, witnessed a total solar eclipse here in Australia. Even photographed it; made a filter out of 3 layers of exposed and developed b/w film - the big format type used in Box Brownies, and it actually worked really well. Took several with the 'diamond ring' effect at the peak of the eclipse.

Agree with you about the strange vision and sensation as the eclipse progressed. At about 2.30 pm, as it darkened, the birds fell quiet, the streetlamps came on. Definitely an other-worldy feeling.

Next partial eclipse here is 2038. If I'm still around I hope they wheel me outdoors!
