2. Well I'll fill in the obvious: payback.

We bled the former Soviet Union dry in Afghanistan arming people just as horrible as the Taliban, including of course the pre-cursor to al qaeda and a certain bin Laden. The Russians are of course going to make our occupation of Afghanistan as painful as it can be.

The re-emergence of Russia as an independent actor on the world stage has unbalanced our grip on planetary hegemony. They've turned the tables on us, screwed up our elections, put their compliant asshole in the presidency, and sure, they are going to make us bleed in Afghanistan until we too are forced to exit. The game is on, the rules have changed, and nobody knows where this all ends up.
