to go live in Denmark permanently even if we find the notion comforting thanks to our Danish DIL. So much to admire, wonderful to visit, lovely if chilly for most of the 4-month warm-enough-to-go-outside season, striking us as miserably dark and cold the rest of the year. (Sorry, Danes, problem's with us--we're from California and getting old, afraid might never acclimate.) It'd be a tad better if we could afford to pay a fortune to live in the warmest areas, instead of retiring where the winds howl off the North Sea, but fat chance of that.

We're just going to stay here and help the Republican Party finish destroying itself. Those considering leaving, though, might want to actually do it before long, just in case a lot more doors to advanced nations start slamming legally shut and the choices dwindle to impoverished, underdeveloped ones.

For example Ireland, Hungary and Italy all have ancestral citizenship programs to varying degrees of descent. If you're Jewish, the spouse, child or grandchild of a Jew you can move to Israel.

Barring that check if your qualifications can score you a work permit in another country or, if retired maybe they offer retiree visas.

I hope you can find a way to make yourself comfortable.

Look at the entrepreneur listing. It's pretty reasonable. $150K CAD is about $100K USD.

It's cold, but it's not impossible. And you'll have to do something with liquid assets. Sitting on them and doing nothing is bad for the money. It's like manure -- it works best when it's spread around.

For example, you can retire in costa rica. Lots of american expats, low cost of living and top notch healthcare. They only require that you prove $1000 a month of income to get a permanent retiree visa (pensionado visa). many people make that much with their social security checks.

breakdown of costs:

https://www.internationalliving-magazine.com/retire-to-costa-rica.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIztnxpqyn1QIVkEoNCh3OZgjWEAAYASAAEgJgTvD_BwE

You can live comfortably with $2000 a month.

I've been sending private messages about a group to certain people who I think would be interested, but after the advance with Trumpcare, Lamar Smith's shift on global warming which is all but a call for genocide against groups like indigenous Siberians, continued flirting with Putin, and now the Trump transgender ban; I think it's time to put it all out in the open.

I'm going to be making an announcement later today.

Our retirement plans are to buy an RV and travel, you can take it south to Mexico (just keep up on the drug war so you don't inadvertently travel into a war zone).

2018 I'll still be in the workforce, however, the company I work for is owned by foreign one. I could easily apply and bail to a European country, Australia, Canada, Mexico, etc. Hopefully, I read the tea leaves ahead of time before someone else gets the same idea.

By far the stablest and most democratic country in the region.
Following a contested Presidential election in 1948, their national hero led an uprising that saw the bloodiest event in their history with 2,000 killed in the civil war. The victorious rebels abolished the military (they still have only a police force) and within a year had drafted a new constitution and held a free and fair election, which the rebel leader won.
Beautiful country, very environmentally conscious, and you can live well on about $25,000/year.

I've been researching for our own escape/retirement, and it does seem like just about everybody I've read has said that there is a pretty big culture shock for American ExPats going to Central American countries. It makes sense that there would be given the average income there is a lot lower than it is in the US. The lifestyle is different, and it probably bears consideration when you decide this stuff.

Something I've been looking at just recently is the US Virgin Islands. It's a US territory, but not part of the US Income tax system, and subject to their leadership decisions rather than the US. Again, you have the whole "tourist money"/ good prospective target image to navigate when you move there, but you don'y even need a passport.

Just my own observation from the reading I've done.

If you look at a population map, almost all Canadians are clustered along the southern border. Compared to the giant U.S., it's tiny both geographically in practical terms and population-wise--but prosperous. It needs us to provide additional good jobs, etc., and the money those brings in is very important.

But the only immigrants being accepted from our country are those with skills they need. And, definitely not last, there's also plenty of bigotry, nationalism, and xenophobia up there, even if it hasn't burst out in bonfires like down here. Those things are genetically linked and found everywhere people are. The general negativity of your posts is absolutely nothing to what their own nasty right wingers say about us, and the last thing they want is us moving in. After "Mexicans," of course.

But what's the deal with Canada?
