Leonard Steinhorn: Donald Trump and his supporters may be waging battles against the press, immigrants, voting rights, the environment, science, social welfare programs, Planned Parenthood and what they label political correctness and the deep state.
But to them these are mere skirmishes in a much larger conflict. The president has essentially declared an all-out war on the American 1960s.
What he and his followers hope to do is not necessarily turn back the clock to the 1950s, but rather restore a social order, value system and real America that they believe was hijacked by the liberal culture, politics, thought leaders and policy priorities that emerged from the 60s.

(38,311 posts)The power behind them isn't seeking a repeal of the 'sixties, they are seeking the kind of racist fascism and nationalism that Hitler rode to power.
Fortunately for the world, Hitler was a deranged meth-head, Russia was willing to fight Nazi Germany to the last man, and American resources (oil, metal, food, factories, and labor) were beyond Nazi Germany's reach.
Maybe 30-40% of U.S. American people believe an authoritarian government, founded on some bizarre and hypocritical evangelical "Christian" principles, would be a good thing. Just so long as it's "their" people holding that authority. Trump plays to that audience.
I'm one who believes the U.S.A. would have folded to the Nazis quicker than France did had the Nazis the geographic reach, and had so many of our ruling class not been Anglophiles. The Amazon version of Philip K. Dick's The Man in the High Castle doesn't seem far fetched to me. I've even seen people here on DU defending the "papers please" mentality.
