The first time Edward Morrissette headed toward a place named Omaha, the men around him were throwing up into their helmets.
In 1944 he was among the soldiers who stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day during World War II.
Years later, after retiring from the Strategic Air Command, he settled in a very different Omaha, where Thursday morning a phone call interrupted him. His family had helped plan a surprise for his 94th birthday that would bring the memories of his service flooding back.
Brig. Gen. William Turner, the senior acting commander of Morrissettes former Army division, waited on the line.
