There have been 11 or 12 arrests for using chalk on sidewalks and benches in LA despite a 9th circuit court judge having ruled that no chalk shall harm a sidewalk...this has not slowed down the police one bit. Tonight they wanted to join "Artwalk" and do civil disobedience chalking, and I can hear police helicopters.
More than four shots fired, note that none of them are Occupiers. The one on the phone was just going to a 7/11...

(38,893 posts)A green-stocked shotgun had been spotted earlier, which is "less-lethal" (yeah, that's what nearly killed Scott Olsen).
There has been no dispersal order!

I would've got a screenshot but because the connection was bad I didn't see his face but for one frame, didn't have a chance to capture it.

"They can't do it until they give a dispersal order." (after kettling them of course)
I hate the media, journalists are such scum in reality, they want to run the narrative and this guy is just so disappointed they're not doing it while the news is playing...

Situation has changed a bit since I grabbed that screenshot though.

(8,244 posts)Early on I heard him say how ridiculous it was that this was all about chalk on the sidewalk.
Whenever he goes into "on the air mode" he switches tones to make it sound like occupiers just randomly started attacking the police.
joshcryer
(62,536 posts)But then he basically said "use a waterhose."
I mean, really? I'm not even sure that guy has an opinion, he just wants the best shots, as far as I'm concerned.
His on the air mode is just really fucked up and stupid.
pinboy3niner
(53,339 posts)That thing? And the chopper guy wants it used against the people?
joshcryer
(62,536 posts)But before he said that he compared them to his 6 year old. It's like he wanted to insult them for chalking but then wanted to mock the police for taking it so seriously or something.
Basically his opinion, imo, was all over the place.
pinboy3niner
(53,339 posts)Described protesters as 'unruly,' 'disrespectful,' etc., bottles thrown at police.
Police had pushed them back to 4th & Spring, dispersal orders were reportedly being given, and police appeared ready to move in to make arrests soon.
The number of people involved was reported as about 500 at the start, now down to fewer than 20.
The news reported seeing 1 arrest very recently (possibly for assault on a cop), and being told by protesters that there had been about 8 earlier.
Police spokesperson reported an ambulance has been called for one injured person (hit by skateboard).
The news may be going to a live update after the break.

(62,536 posts)Liz was even saying Artwalk isn't even an Occupy event really. Cops just being assholes...
pinboy3niner
(53,339 posts)The news reported bottles thrown and shattered glass in the street--but usually the only bottles Occupiers have are plastic water bottles.
joshcryer
(62,536 posts)I wonder if there was any animosity over that. Artwalkers were just going by and chalking the wall and moving on. I think it looked pretty though! It made the wall look interesting and could be washed off with ease... so I can't imagine bar patrons being that pissed off.

(53,339 posts)Looks like it's coming to an end. Reiterating rocks and bottles were thrown earlier, one officer reported injured. Calmer now, police walking from 4th & Spring to 5th.

Fire Walk With Me
(38,893 posts)is ludicrous and legally offensive. They get charged with vandalism. Note that a 9th Circuit Judge ruled "no chalk shall harm a sidewalk", and there is chalk designed specifically designed for sidewalks, which easily washes off.
There had been 11 arrests for chalking until now, and word of 11 additional tonight.
It's about politics. The local 1% are actually, literally calling for an end to "intelligence-based graffiti".

(62,325 posts)Eg, while the police were busy at the main location of the protests, another group should have gone to different location and covered that area with chalk. And then declare victory and put it on Utube.
Splitting up and going to locations that they do not announce would confuse the cops.
joshcryer
(62,536 posts)I expect the Artwalkers / chalkers weren't intending to use Occupy tactics so they dispersed. Seems like some bar patrons got in on the excitement too, and that isn't the best combination.

(17,162 posts)"In summer 1937, Joseph Goebbels degenerate art commission canvassed Germany, searching public and private collections. Propaganda office officials seized the works of Otto Dix, Oskar Kokoschka, Erich Nolde, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Pechstein, and Käthe Kollwitz, among others. Especially hard hit was the modern art division of the Berlin National Gallery, which lost 136 paintings, 28 sculptures, and 324 drawings."
In 2012, the LA police attacked artists armed with CHALK on the streets of downtown Los Angeles...
Wow, just WOW, is all I can say.
I sure don't pay the salaries of the LAPD to attack the artists on Art Walk for carrying and
making CHALK ART.
I hope MANY lawsuits are filed.

Los Angeles was placed on a citywide tactical alert Thursday night when hundreds of people, including Occupy LA protesters, gathered near Downtown LA as part of a demonstration by the group that set up camp on City Hall lawn late last year.

Fire Walk With Me
(38,893 posts)"We were handing out free chalk for freedom of speech," said Cheryl Aichele, 34, a member of Occupy L.A.
Police arrived at the intersection shortly before 10 p.m. to move protesters blocking the street. At one point, an unidentified man tossed a glass bottle over his shoulder that landed in front of a line of LAPD officers gathered on Spring Street between 4th and 5th streets. The man was shot with what appeared to be a non-lethal weapon, witnesses said.
Police used batons and non-lethal projectiles to disperse the crowd, which in turn threw bottles and cans at officers and chanted, "Whose streets? Our streets!"
Hundreds of officers in riot gear systematically moved the crowd away block-by-block as people gathered in the windows of nearby apartments and bars to watch and snap cellphone pictures.

(62,536 posts)The plutocrats hate that shit. Oh, and hundreds of random people with chalk probably scared the hell out of 'em, too.
Occupy was largely motivated by handing out free food (and volunteering free food), and of course that attracted a lot of people, thus the crackdowns. Free stuff, bad!
