https://www.mediamatters.org/video/2017/08/01/fox-guest-dinesh-d-souza-hitler-took-three-very-destructive-genocidal-ideas-democratic-party/217465"Well, the book uncovers a sort of secret history between fascism and the Democratic Party and the left. This is important because, as you know, fascism is now the card that is played by the left against [President Donald] Trump. Trump is a fascist, Republicans are the party of fascism. I show that the opposite is true. Fascism has always been on the left. I also point out three ideas that Hitler got, very destructive, genocidal ideas from the Democratic Party."

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
Germany has just suffered a brutal, humiliating defeat in WWI.
Communism is threatening the european way-of-life.
Historical economic crises are crushing the german economy in 1923 and 1929.
Pseudo-darwinian racial theories are widespread in european society.
Mussolini invents fascism in Italy.
The NSDAP brown-shirts are regularly getting into bloody streetfights with communist thugs.
But it was the Democrats who gave Hitler his ideas. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

You need a second oxymoron to counteract the first.

(82,849 posts)Oh look, Dinesh has another book to sell. Isn't it sweet that some publishing house thinks his scribblings are worth money? Now, let's talk about how raising the minimum wage turns workers into slothful, lazy layabouts who don't contribute anything to society.

This s is my recap the next day on DU. 2007.
So D'Souza was on to promote his latest book "The Enemy At Home: The Cultural Left and Its Responsibilty for 9/11" (remember that title it comes in handy later) and after he claims that Reagan's selling of Hawk missiles to Ghaddafi kept him out of the terrorism business (huh?) he went on to claim that gays were part of the reason that 9/11 happened oh and then he admitted that he really didn't know very much about gay culture.
THEN it got weird.
Colbert actually got him to admit that he, D'Souza, agreed with "some of the things that these radical Islamic fundamentalist have to say" as Colbert put it "you do agree with that statement don't you"
D'Souza "Yes"
then and I mean right then Colbert says (~paraphrased) "So the left is the cause of why 9/11 happened"
D'Souza "I think that is taking it a bit far"
Colbert "That is why I had you on the show because I agree with that statement (pointing to and reading from the book cover)The Cultural Left and Its Responsibilty for 9/11"
D'Souza (incredulously) "I DIDN'T DO 9/11!!!"
Colbert then went on to turn it back on the the left and Hollywood taking his foot off D'Souza's neck if you will.
The funniest part was that D'Souza didn't seem to know what was happening. Colbert used an old tactic that RW radio host do all the time-keep reasking a question cutting off the replies until you make a statement and ask if they agree with it. I watched this thing a couple of times (sorry didn't take exact notes on the quotation), the audience's response is muted a bit but some appear to realize what Colbert had just gotten D'Souza to do-REJECT HIS OWN THESIS.

(54,575 posts)1. Hitler got his ideas for mass extermination of Jews, gypsies, lesbians & gays, etc. from the United States. In the Twenties, states were sterilizing wholesale populations that were poor and uneducated and sometimes mentally challenged under the guise of feeble-mindedness. Hitler started with sterilization and moved ahead with extermination.
2. Hitler had a photo of Henry Ford hanging in his anteroom because of Ford's virulent anti-Semitism (published in his newspaper) and Ford's endorsement of state-sponsored eugenics to breed a better generation.
3. While the *Southern* democrats of the Twenties and the Thirties leaned toward segregation, the KKK, and Jim Crow laws, it was a segment of the party, not the party itself. If anyone was Fascist, it was a certain segment of republican business leaders who proposed a Putsch to remove FDR from office by the military and install a corporate leader in his place to run the country.

(888 posts)Obviously, facts are stubborn things.
Hitler was one of the founders of the Nazi party.
The opposition at the time was called the Socialist Democrats.
The opposite, in the reasons the Nazis got a footing.
Socialist Democrats were enamored with Stalin and communism. The opposite of fascism.

(16,670 posts)The biggest parties at the time were:
NSDAP - nationalist, fascist, anti-liberal, racist
Zentrum - basically centrists
SPD - social-democrats, center-left
KPD - communists, extreme left
The democracy of the Weimarer Republik was young and inexperienced and had no system in place how to deal with political sabotage.
The Communists and the NSDAP both wanted to see democracy gone and both sabotaged the parliamentary process. Crisis ensued, except the NSDAP was able to outmaneuver the KPD by allying with Big Money and used the political chaos to their advantage. The KPD lost the power-struggle and was destroyed.
But make no mistake: Hitler rose to power because democracy was under attack from both sides.
