We should not resort to violence.

(25,406 posts)Remember the Quentin Tarentino movie "Inglorious Basterds" from 2009? It proved that some of us find entertainment value in war atrocities committed by the "good" side.

(613 posts)We must still resist.
But resist peacefully, as Dr. King taught.

(25,406 posts)that the anti-fascist groups take your advice into consideration, their words and the tone of them seem to attract white supremacists like a red cape in front of a bull. They're hoping to become sympathetic "victims" from these rallies, they just didn't see Fields doing this.

(613 posts)I don't endorse violence, period.
Dr. King's great insight was that the side that disavows violence in the long run wins.

(73,778 posts)The way I look at it, if punching nazis now helps to bring them around, it does them the favor of us not needing to shoot them later.

(39,382 posts)My grandfather's generation fought nazis to save Europe. If I've got to fight nazis to save America, I'll do what I can.
You cannot defeat evil like nazis, white supremacists, and fascists by peacefully protesting.
I'm not saying we fight in the streets, yet, but if they attack, you better fight back.

(38,820 posts)is that certain factions of the counter-protestors refused to pledge to be non-violent. When I have people I trust - working on the ground to ensure that "violence on many sides" does not occur - who tells me that they were concerned about violence from our side, it makes it much harder for me to make the statement that Trump's statement as false - or entirely off-base, without qualification.
We should not be using, or cheering violence, and we should be protesting in a manner designed to minimize the possibility that we will be justified in using violence in self-defense.
That said, the most prominent violence I am aware of came from the racist side. Trump had an obligation to name it and condemn it. He failed miserably.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
