We Need To Talk About The Anti-Semitism At The Charlottesville Protest.

This weekend, self-identifying white nationalists, white supremacists, and neo-Nazis marched on the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville and violently protested in the town, ending with the death of at least one person and leaving dozens more injured. People across the country condemned the events. In addition to the horror of watching those hateful humans march in broad daylight without fearing any consequences, I found it disturbing that many people, including liberals and progressives, didn’t acknowledge the hateful anti-Semitic comments made by these Nazis. In some cases, they tried to argue that they didn’t happen.

Think of those who believe the protesters from Unite the Right weren’t saying “Jew will not replace us,” but “You will not replace us.” Actress Olivia Wilde posted an Instagram on behalf of her mother, a candidate for the House of Representatives, that talked about Nazism and Nazi language, but made no mention of Jews or anti-Semitism. Bernie Sanders mentioned neo-Nazis in a tweet but didn’t talk of Jews or anti-Semitism.

This strange in-between of calling out Nazis without directly acknowledging their hate towards Jews made me heave a very, very long sigh.

While narratives try to say otherwise, America also has a long, violent, and discriminatory history with Jews. Ever heard of the lynching of Jewish-American engineer Leo Frank? The glaring anti-Semitism of celebrated American industrialist Henry Ford? The Johnson-Reed Act of 1924 that used geographic targeting to keep Jews from immigrating to the U.S.? In recent months we’ve seen over 100 Jewish schools and centers receive bomb threats and numerous Jewish cemeteries vandalized in targeted attacks.

There statements were similar.

Just curious.

He's the one who had relatives murdered by the nazis.

I'm Jewish, too. The events were horribly disturbing. A black man was badly beaten in the head by 4 nazis.

To me the definition of the word nazi is antisemitism and racism. So if they used the word nazi, antisemitism is clear.

People will defend almost every minority out there, except Jews. Most people defending Jews are Jews. We have very few allies, and the ones we do have need to work overtime.

There is an old saying that goes...

"The English hate the French, who hate the Germans, who hate the Turks, who hate the Greeks, but everybody hates the Jews!"

It was true then, and it is true now. It doesn't matter how raucous the Nazis get, the only thing people focus on is their racism. Anti-Semitism? Unworthy of discussion. FFS, look at the number of threads about these events and there are almost no comments or reactions to the anti-Semitism, most articles don't even bother to mention the anti-Semitism.

I posted an article from a Jewish news source in the Jewish group and the first goddamned comment was dismissive of the actual article. We aren't seen as "real" Americans worthy of respect; we aren't seen as a "real" minority deserving of protection. What makes matters worse are those who aren't just ignoring the anti-Semitism, but using this opportunity to engage in low-level anti-Semitism themselves, by basically trying to pin this on Jews in the "president's" administration by listing them all off. All the talk of Jared and Ivanka and making it "all about the money", basically relying on the anti-Semitic trope of money-grubbing Jews. But be sure, there will be so-called "experts" (who aren't Jewish) to come along and dictate what is and isn't anti-Semitism, and how it should or shouldn't be discussed, and when it is appropriate. If they decide they want to hear a Jewish opinion, they will shop it out. These are the same people who decry "mansplainin'" and "whitesplainin'", but think nothing of "Gentilesplainin'" to Jews!

Until something big happens to a bunch of Jews, very few people will give two shits, and if something (more likely "when&quot is to happen, then expect the keys to come out and start jingling because the discussions still won't be about anti-Semitism but about everything but!

about the hateful things being said about Jews "taking over the country" while I did see it mentioned on twitter - by Jews. And like you said, even here (which is far too typical) the charge was dismissed and diminished. The far left has become just as bad, just as hateful, just as dismissive of real anti Jewish sentiment as the right has become. Fucking depressing.

My ex husband was adopted and way back when we were young and new parents, he never had a desire to know his background.
Then, several months ago my daughter tells me he did that test that tells you your background. Turns out he is half Italian and half Jewish.
This makes my daughter Jewish.
My mother was a child in France during the Nazi take over. She lived under Nazi rule while my grandfather, a policeman, was part of the underground.
Hearing the stories I felt deep sadness over what happened to the Jews in Europe during WWII
Now I find my daughter is descended from the jewish tribe that suffered from the Nazis.
So, I feel an affinity for the antifa
And the garbage being spewed about Jews by the alt right, et.al. these days hits me personally. They are hating on my beloved daughter. And my precious granddaughters.

16. Jews will not replace us: Why white supremacists go after Jews
Sun Aug 13, 2017, 11:14 PM
Aug 2017

Excerpt:

They immediately went after the Jews. At their Friday night rally at the University of Virginia, the white nationalists brandished torches and chanted anti-Semitic and Nazi slogans, including “blood and soil” (an English rendering of the Nazi “blut und boden”) and “Jews will not replace us” — all crafted to cast Jews as foreign interlopers who need to be expunged. The attendees proudly displayed giant swastikas and wore shirts emblazoned with quotes from Adolf Hitler. One banner read, “Jews are Satan’s children.”

“The truth is,” Duke told a large crowd Saturday, “the American media, and the American political system, and the American Federal Reserve, is dominated by a tiny minority: the Jewish Zionist cause.” Addressing another group, Richard Spencer mocked Charlottesville’s Jewish mayor, Mike Signer. “Little Mayor Signer — ‘See-ner’ — how do you pronounce this little creep’s name?” Spencer asked. The crowd responded by chanting, “Jew, Jew, Jew.” In TV interviews, attendees were not shy about their anti-Semitism.

The discrimination towards Jews hasn’t just come from blatant white supremacists, either; when future president Ulysses S. Grant was a general in the Union Army during the Civil War, he singled out Jews “as a class” and expelled them from the territory he was commanding from Mississippi to Illinois over accusations that they smuggled goods between the Union and the Confederacy.

From original article.

everyone who is not them. Yes, they meant Jews. They always mean Jews. And blacks, and browns, and people who speak strangely. Gays, lesbians, people with disabilities, people who wear odd clothing. The over-educated, people who believe in different deities or no deities at all, people who believe in everyone being equal. In fact, everyone who is not exactly like they are is suspect.

If you are not them, you are an OTHER, and are subject to hatred, violence and even death.

If you are not them, you are in danger from them.
