James Hohmann: Donald Trump often behaves as if hes first and foremost the president of the states and the people who voted for him. Thats at odds with the American tradition, and its problematic as a governing philosophy especially in a moment of crisis. Trumps initially tone-deaf response to Charlottesville underscores why.
Animated by grievance and congenitally disinclined to extend olive branches, Trump lashes out at his enemies his 2020 reelection campaign even used that word in a commercial released on Sunday while remaining reticent to explicitly call out his fans no matter how odious, extreme or violent.
Channeling his inner-Richard Nixon, who kept an enemies list of his own, candidate Trump often claimed to speak for a silent majority. After failing to win the popular vote, President Trump has instead governed on behalf of an increasingly vocal but diminishing minority.

(2,957 posts)Trump has never had any intention of 'uniting' our country. Instead he just wants to pander to red states, tear down everything Obama did, and give the finger to blue states. The division will get worse as long as he keeps this divisive crap up.

(4,268 posts)How many times have we heard the talking heads talk about "his base", "what they elected him to do", "he's keeping his promises to his base", etc etc.
These idiots talk about it like it's normal, and don't realize he's being the president of less than 20% of the country.

(37,428 posts)He's just trying to enjoy the echoes of 2016 from his remaining white enthusiasts. It's the only part of presidenting he enjoys, and the rest of the job is boring and frustrating enough to have sent him into virtual hiding six months in.
Of course he wants to relive the campaign endlessly. It was the last time when he didn't have any responsibilities, and it was when the cheers were the loudest.
