When I first signed up, 2013, there was an icon button to tap for "trending " subjects. The following twitter update requires you to tap the search icon to see trending topics. I haven't installed the latest version because I didn't much like the last update.
If I recall correctly, twitter uses your location to determine what trending topics you'll see; I get weird topics, but did not see #ImpeachTrump on the trending page, so I use the search feature to look for topics that are trending and then I will see tweets on that subject.
You have to fool around on twitter to get the hang of how it works
