Reality Check: Why GOPpie Leadership CAN'T Abandon [Redacted]

Well, okay, aside from the fact that a good many of them probably ARE the reanimated corpses of Babbit-era Chamber of Commerce Glee Club Directors, infused with Demon Spirits from Dante's Ninth Circle of Hell.

But there are some who aren't.

Disclaimer: While it's been a good many years since I could name a GOPpie who didn't make me roll my eyes and wish they'd find an alternate and more lucrative career selling Interesting Kitchen Appliances on the Home Shopping Channel, I have voted for more than one GOPpie, in the dim and misty past, when there were a higher percentage of actual human beings capable of empathy and concern for all their fellow citizens in their ranks.

There used to be some decent ones. Laws of averages being what they are, there likely still are some. There are at least two state legislators here in New Mexico who have an (R) after their names who have done more than one decent thing and manifested actual integrity on occasion.

So let's give them the benefit of the doubt. Let's say that there are some GOPpies, even some in the Party leadership, who are genuinely appalled and horrified by the titular head of their Party's smoochfest with the dregs of history.

There's probably a slightly larger percentage of GOPpies capable of a level of rational self-interest that can perceive the horrific shoals ahead as their Party sinks further and further into the septic leachfield of Nazi-fellating and serving drinks on their knees at the Klavern's Annual Kinkathon.

So why aren't they doing anything about it?

Simple: They can't win an election without the Deplorable Vote.

They've put all their eggs in the basket of "appeal to the furthest-out wackadoodles in every conceivable hate-filled and authoritarian-worshipping constituency" for decades. They've pandered to spittle-flecked Xtian Fundie nutbags, selfish Randite wankers, nudge-nudge wink-wink All Lives Matter racist numpties, and incel misogynist crybaby broflakes because, hey, nature abhors a vacuum, and no one else was giving them the time of day. It was an easy gimme. Those votes were anybody's for the taking.

So the GOP tarted themselves up in wackadoodle colors and promised the schmucks everything they wanted.

And they won, and they won, and they won.

For election cycle after election cycle, they managed to bicycle on the high wire of mainstream conservative fuddy-duddy change-averse establishment white parochialism while juggling the flaming torches, razors, and venomous reptiles of their out-there wackadoodle constituencies.

Sure, they noticed that the parochial establishment demographic was aging and shrinking at an ever-increasing rate, but so long as they could pander to the Deplorables and collaborate in monging fear and ginning up hate to expand their numbers, they'd still come out ahead.

And now, here they are. They've reached the tipping point. Their Deplorable Party head has jettisoned the bicycle of respectable moderation, and the safety net of ordinary conservative and moderate middle American white people has been shrunk by demographic inevitability. They can't do a damn thing but keep juggling the razors, deadly creatures, and flaming torches, and hope to hell they survive.

They're not going to jettison >Redacted<.

They can't.

Too many of them are convinced they simply can't win an election without the slime mold he drags to the polls.

And for all the effort the rest of us are putting into demonstrating what integrity, resistance, patriotism, and humanity mean, I simply don't see us being able to convince them that jettisoning their wackadoodle corps will give them any better electoral future.

They'll hang on, and do whatever they think they can get away with, whatever it takes, to continue the smash-and-grab raid on America.

pessimistically,
Bright

I also think that Republican politicians are legitimately afraid of hardcore Trump supporters. Willie Pep Aug 2017 #2
Exactly so. The most productive thing we can do is try to minimize collateral damage. n/t TygrBright Aug 2017 #3

So what should we do? Civil conflict seems very likely as the know nothing bozos become more emboldened but see no results.
Im am more saddened than angry and more angry than afraid.
Why cant the asshat just drop dead? Keeling over on camera would be the only way to get rid of him without violence.

Oh, my congress critter is Hal Rogers. He has been there forever and his office has helped my family on a couple of occasions where we thought we had no chance for a good outcome. He has brought a lot of commerce to his district and doesn't get too involved in the "dems are evil and Jesus is a rep" crap. I think he may be a decent man who cares about his constituents.

And I don't just mean afraid of losing their support come election time but afraid that some of Trump's crazier fans will show up at their offices or even their homes armed and ready to cause damage if they ever seriously oppose Trump or try to impeach him.

It is hard for me to feel sorry for the Republicans because they have used racist dog whistles and stirred the pot of far-right conspiracy theories for decades. Now they are being held hostage by the same elements they courted. Oh well, they can live with their Frankenstein monster.
