(7,951 posts)That is a beautiful statue. But I think that was the entire point - Lucifer was originally a hot-as-shit angel who got it in his head to challenge God, and lost.

So, a good retort is: "You want a Confederate statue? Put Lucifer in your church like in Belgium. Go right ahead and then we can talk about your Confederate anti-black signaling."

(1,343 posts)several more images of Christ in that church, and only one of Lucifer, then perhaps the statues of Lee, Jackson et al need to be surrounded by Union generals and soldiers? That would satisfy all those who say the statues should remain because history, you know.
And w.r.t slave owning founding fathers, their slave owning isn't celebrated, but increasingly despised .. acknowledging how slavery is still romanticized (including the veneration of civil war confederate "heroes" ) is important.
I even like this approach:
Beartracks
(14,568 posts)... the Confederate statues and memorials are indeed in public places of honor, which is secular veneration.

You can put an mdash in many places like here by typing — including the ampersand and semicolon.

(52 posts)As a (former) typographer, being forced to use double hyphens drives me nuts. Tblue's great article was written quite awhile ago, so I'm wondering if there's been a solution to this problem since. (I don't know how to put DU links in. Hail, I don't really know how to insert any links... Copy them before starting a reply?)
Showing my age here, I used to have a program that allowed me to use WordStar to code stuff, then convert the file to play out on Compugraphics equipment.
I had a dream a year or so ago in which I was explaining the difference between em and en dashes. Haven't been a typographer since the late '80s.

(29,624 posts)I don't understand why people who name themselves Christians vote for people like Reagan and Trump, who are clearly completely irreligious. Carter, Gore, Kerry, and Hillary Clinton are all churchgoers (not saying this as a for or against, just a fact) and yet somehow the religious right couldn't identify with them.
Good for Chelsea.

They support Trump who says he is so perfect that he does not need Christ or his forgiveness.
Like today's evangelical/religious right supporters, Trump is a Political Christian, not a Christian of faith.
Evangelicals/religious right are easily able to spin their beliefs for political expediency.

(3,268 posts)Le génie du mal (installed 1848) or The Genius of Evil, known informally in English as Lucifer or The Lucifer of Liège,[1] is a religious sculpture executed in white marble by the Belgian artist Guillaume Geefs. Francophone art historians most often refer to the figure as an ange déchu, a "fallen angel." It is located within the elaborate pulpit (French chaire de vérité, "seat of truth"
of St. Paul's Cathedral, Liège.
