apparently why people are writing factual stories about his statements. Could this be an attempt by the GOP to make the MSM and Dems hold the bag when Trump resigns. I mean that is how it will look to Trump's base that the GOP desperately wants back. And why not wedge them into hating democrats and the Main Stream Media when Trumps leaves. Especially the people in the Trump coalition that were pretty new voters for Republicans (either people who had voted democratic or had not voted much before).

(82,849 posts)Anyone who spent more time publicly feeling sorry for Jeffrey Lord than for Heather Heyer doesn't deserve to be liked. Or respected. Oh, and did we mention the public encouragement to attack reporters? Because that's a thing Trump does on a regular basis at his campaign rallies.

Functional humans recognize that he's projecting like crazy, but his deplorables absorb it like sponges. The GOP spokespeople are there to drive the message home.

(101,316 posts)Yes, you're right, they will want to salvage something from a Trump resignation, and for that they need scapegoats. On a smaller scale, it was how they handled Palin's resignation as governor - they claim it wasn't that she decided she could make more money from gullible supporters and stupid TV projects, or that she really wasn't up to the job. No, to them, she was forced out by the media asking unfair questions and looking into how she'd behaved as governor, which was too far for them.
Getting potential GOP voters to never trust 'mainstream media' is extremely useful for them. It can tie Fox News to them, for instance - while Fox has a business model of "say what the GOP wants us to say, and we'll get that section of their voters who still want their news from the TV as a guaranteed audience", it means they control the message to those voters really tightly. For the alt right who wander the internet looking for stories to confirm their prejudices, the attacks on the 'MSM' create an internet marketplace of conspiracy theories, and bubbles of bigotry.
It will certainly help them paint Trump's resignation as a tragedy rather than the first step in healing the USA. They want an atmosphere where the media is scared to criticise Republicans.

We don't want this vile, stupid, thuggish, trashy, bigoted, paranoid, and hateful group of people.
Did I mention "stupid"?
It's difficult to believe that the United States has compulsory education to the age of sixteen.

(9,670 posts)The media was proximately connected to putting Trump in office. Once ensconced, they have (rightfully) questioned his every word, act and omission.
The bottom line truth is, Trump's propaganda machine can make any claim it wishes; the base will lap it up, regardless of its veracity, and truth is of absolutely zero consequence.
