2. Houston Here.......I copy....

You get to be my first ever post on DU.

As a Houstonian, I would direct your attention to the fact that these here fossil fuel companies are not just here to serve the local population. Since you are assigning blame to "our" fossil fuel companies as the root cause of dooming the planet, let me point out something to you;

Below is a list of all the things that "our" fossil fuel companies produce, that YOU use, everyday. Unless you live on a deserted island, wearing nothing but a palm tree for underwear, the simple fact that YOU do not live here in Houston, does not mean YOU do not contribute to the problem.

Rather than identify the problem, AND provide a coherent, viable and sustainable solution, you are sitting on a chair, sipping your drink from a Styrofoam cup, typing on your computer, or phone, as the Air Conditioner is running (All of which incorporates petroleum products/byproducts), blaming several million people who are suffering a catastrophic event, that they are the cause of dooming the planet.

A partial list of products made from Petroleum (144 of 6000 items)

Americans consume petroleum products at a rate of three-and-a-half gallons of oil and more than
250 cubic feet of natural gas per day each! But, as shown here petroleum is not just used for fuel

progress, but it has become a double-edged sword for human health and even existence.

Dependence, as is evident with drugs on the personal scale, on fossil fuels is more and more being seen as a deadly habit.

5. I understand all that... but we do need to tamp down on carbon based fuel burning, dont we?

Houston is, as I see, the capital of the Oil industry. It has for year fought restrictions on CO2, whether cap & trade or carbon taxes.

Some , if not all, of what we are witnessed is the effects of human activity.

6. Wouldn't the world be a much better place if the manufacturers of those products

(not to mention paper, textiles and medicine) would realize they can make it with hemp!
Sure, I guess the oil industry would not be as rich as they have become, but it would bring up others (like farmers).
It would do so much for climate change. It would also have reduced the amount of petroleum chemicals that are in the water right now.

But, the fossil fuel people have a strong hold on Congress (both federal and state in some places like TX). They don't want to see this change.

and continue to pollute the planet, and thwart clean energy, for the obscene profit of "elite" republicans.
