By JOSH DAWSEY 08/30/2017 07:26 PM EDT
Special counsel Robert Muellers team is working with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman on its investigation into Paul Manafort and his financial transactions, according to several people familiar with the matter.
The cooperation is the latest indication that the federal probe into President Donald Trumps former campaign chairman is intensifying. It also could potentially provide Mueller with additional leverage to get Manafort to cooperate in the larger investigation into Trumps campaign, as Trump does not have pardon power over state crimes.
The two teams have shared evidence and talked frequently in recent weeks about a potential case, these people said. One of the people familiar with progress on the case said both Muellers team and Schneidermans have collected evidence on financial crimes, including potential money laundering.
No decision has been made on where or whether to file charges. Nothing is imminent, said one of the people familiar with the case.

(14,971 posts)FinCen is also doing an investigation in Florida, New York etc on using real estate to launder money.
FinCEN Targets Shell Companies Purchasing Luxury Properties in Seven Major Metropolitan Areas
WASHINGTONThe Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) today announced the issuance of revised Geographic Targeting Orders (GTOs) that require U.S. title insurance companies to identify the natural persons behind shell companies used to pay for high-end residential real estate in seven metropolitan areas. Following the recent enactment of the Countering Americas Adversaries through Sanctions Act, FinCEN is revising the GTOs to capture a broader range of transactions and include transactions involving wire transfers. FinCEN also expanded the GTOs to include transactions conducted in the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii.
In addition, FinCEN today published an Advisory to provide financial institutions and the real estate industry with information on the money laundering risks associated with real estate transactions, including those involving luxury property purchased through shell companies, particularly when conducted without traditional financing. Such transactions are vulnerable to abuse by criminals seeking to launder illegal proceeds and mask their identities. The Advisory provides information on how to detect and report these transactions to FinCEN.
Through this advisory and other outreach to the private sector, FinCEN, industry, and law enforcement will be better positioned to protect the real estate markets from serving as a vehicle to launder illicit proceeds, said FinCEN Acting Director Jamal El-Hindi. FinCEN also thanks Congress for its modification of the Geographic Targeting Order authority, the first use of which will enable FinCEN to collect further information to combat the potential misuse of shell companies to purchase luxury real estate.

(6,329 posts)Dirty Don can't pardon someone convicted in a state court.

(7,715 posts)Presidential pardoning power can also cover someone not convicted, and even not indicted. However, as you are absolutely correct in stating, the Buffoon cannot pardon for a state (i.e., non-federal) offense.
Very smart move by Mueller.
So do now we expect the Rethugs to launch a full frontal assault on NY Governor Cuomo?

(24,259 posts)The NY attorney general is an elected, not selected, official. Cuomo can't fire him, only the taxpayers can on election day and that's probably not going to happen.

(24,259 posts)won't take kindly to being threatened, has more than a few connections if needed and there's no love lost between Trump and Cuomo any more than there is between Trump and Schneiderman.

(470 posts)Despite the fact that many of us spent months during the campaign trying to tell everyone what a despicable, sociopathic, lying, criminal, piece of shit this bloodsucking cockroach trump and his whole filthy family are and have been all of their worthless lives.
There are two salient facts known and to be known about trump:
1) HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT ANYONE OR ANYTHING BUT HIMSELF
2) HE WANTS REVENGE ON THE WHOLE WORLD

(9,682 posts)The whole damned Trump brood will be implicated. Ivanka. Junior. Eric. Jared. Sater. Manafort. Cohen. Et al.
These crimes will stretch back decades. They precede any Russia/election crimes. The former ultimately led to the latter, but these are 2 different sets of infractions.
The Trump syndicate was able to remain afloat because it stayed one step ahead of its nemeses. Its greatest error was submitting to politics, to the presidency, where its offenses were sure to see daylight.
Everything else you see or hear from the Trump camp is subterfuge. Money crimes and collusion are the only things on Trump's mind. Knowing his family is truly in the crosshairs is Trump's sole motivation. He has deflected, lied and incited, but only to draw attention away from the one thing that he knows in his own mind he has done, and he knows his family has done, and it's eating him alive.
Oh yeah, damned straight. He's going down. And so are his progeny.

(19,259 posts)I have a feeling it may be New York State that prosecutes and imprisons Trump, his family, and all of Trump's henchmen. Schneiderman has had a hard on for Trump going back to 2013, when he started the many lawsuits against "Trump University".
So yeah, there's a bit of history between the two, and I'm sure Schneiderman would LOVE to take Trump down again. He doesn't seem to like phonies and con-men. Go figure!

(18,585 posts).. state AGs often participate in federal investigations without raising state charges.
State investigators are often the 'boots on the ground' in federal investigations. Ask anyone who's worked with the FBI or the Justice Department.
