http://www.rawstory.com/2017/09/wh-budget-director-boasts-of-tricking-trump-into-slashing-disability-benefits-by-calling-it-welfare/amp/"President Donald Trump vowed throughout the 2016 presidential campaign that he would not cut Social Security or Medicare.
Despite this, however, the presidents proposed budget featured a massive $70 billion cut in Social Security disability benefits over the span of a decade.
A Politico profile of White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney reveals exactly how this happened essentially, Mulvaney tricked Trump into agreeing to disabilities benefits cuts by calling it a welfare program.
Earlier this year, Mulvaney tried to get Trump to agree to cuts in Social Security and Medicare, but the president wouldnt budge. Then he brought up disabilities benefits, which piqued Trumps interest.
Tell me about that, Trump said.
Its welfare, Mulvaney said.
OK, we can fix welfare, Trump declared.
Politico notes that Mulvaney is proudly telling this story about how he manipulated Trump into cutting benefits for 11 million disabled Americans on the record and its an indication of the clout he has that he doesnt fear telling anecdotes that show his boss to be woefully misinformed."....(more)

(7,627 posts)It never does. Usually we end up closer to something between house and senate budget. Its even more true with Trump. That budget also defunds the coast guards significantly, cuts many federal agencies by tens of percents (department of energy, state department, NIH, NOAA, etc..) . Even the GOP wont go along with it. At the end of the day, they will look at their elections prospects and bow to public and lobbyist pressure.

(24,259 posts)SSI is a type of 'welfare' but it's desperately needed by people who can't work due to a disability.
Yes, there's buttwipes that somehow get on it and truly shouldn't be but those are a lot rarer than most think. (Many stories of the supposedly able bodied person on disability reflects more the ignorance of the reporter, not the true ability of the disabled person). The fact is that the vast majority of adults on SSDI or SSI would LOVE to be healthy enough and able to work a regular job.

(53,061 posts)After welfare reform forced states to pay for more cases of long term welfare status, many states, mostly red states, started hiring consultants to move people from state welfare. There was a lot of documentation where poor rural counties were pushing large numbers of middle age (and likely Trump supporters) cases on to SS because there was no likely employment in their area..

Reminds me of how Weinberger fooled both Stockman and Reagan by agreeing to a lower percent but by making it a compound add on in the later years actually instituted huge increases in the defense budget.
