Trump is certainly setting the Presidential standard for incompetence and corruption, but 8 months in I don't think he's passed Buchanan. And I want to be clear that Trump started by undermining the foundations of the democratic process in a way Buchanan didn't.

Let's put it this way: If Trump falls over dead with a heart attack tomorrow, I'm not convinced the damage he's done would be more than the damage Buchanan wrought in four years. He's on track for it, but I don't think we can genuinely say he's there yet. And if he does die or resign tomorrow, Pence will start his own quest to zoom past Buchanan, but that's another question.

I've said at least twice here I think Trump is the worst human being ever to occupy the Oval Office. Johnson was bad enough, but Jackson was a complete SOB, although he had a level of integrity Trump can't even comprehend, let alone aspire to. Nixon was the worst of my lifetime when this year started, but that's a fond memory at this point. Guys like Harding and Grant seem to have done better at collecting scoundrels than being one themselves.

Frankly, I do think the only thing Trump needs to pass Buchanan on the worst President list is time. I just don't think he's had enough yet.

The criticism of Buchanan is mainly based on his acceptance of slavery in the southern states and his belief that he didn't have the power to do anything about it. He basically sat on his ass and passively let secession and the Civil War happen. https://constitutioncenter.org/blog/james-buchanan-why-is-he-considered-americas-worst-president/ He also appears to have leaned on the Supreme Court to decide the Dred Scott case the way they did in order to have a "bipartisan" result, and his inaction on economic issues contributed to a near-collapse of the economy. It seemed that every time he did make a decision it turned out to be the wrong one. http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/09/donald-trump-hillary-clinton-worst-president-james-buchanan-214252

Buchanan, despite his stellar resume, seems to have been spectacularly inept and passive in the face of crises - but as far as one can tell, he was not intentionally destructive. He was also not an egomaniac whose decisions were motivated by nothing more than self-aggrandizement and self-enrichment. I think the ghost of James Buchanan is already partying in the White House attic with fellow bad presidents Franklin Pierce and Warren G. Harding.

And I think we all know who probably thinks the Dred Scott decision had many sides. I'd also add Hoover to the list of Presidents with awesome resumes and nightmarish administrations.

In all candor, we're eight months in and IMO there's a serious argument about whether he's worse than the guy who set the stage for civil war. I just think we're going to have to wait to see how it really shakes out to make that call. Consider Grant's administration. It was held together with chewing gum and a couple of staples, but it wasn't really stressed by external challenges the way a Hoover Administration was. The challenges facing Trump are not encouraging, but I think he has to actually fail them before we can definitively call him worse than Buchanan.

screws the pooch in his capacity as president, or whether he is a completely horrible human being. While it may be too soon to evaluate the damage Trump has done/will do as president, it is incontrovertible that he is a horrible human being, probably the worst person ever to hold the office. And it is likely that his personal awfulness will wreak enormous damage because he combines it with vast ineptitude and ignorance.

Most people know that he was President of Princeton, so a northern college professor should be a liberal, right? But it is usually our early beginnings that define us.
Wilson was born in Virginia in 1856, and his family moved to Augusta, GA. His father was a minister and was instrumental in splitting the Presbyterian Church into Northern and Southern factions in 1861. He served as a chaplain in the CSA. In 1870 they moved to Columbia SC for four years, when Woodrow was 14-18 years old and the South was occupied by US troops during the Reconstruction.

If there was any doubt about his loyalties, it should be noted that he arranged for a private screening of "The Birth of a Nation" at the White House. The movie was a celebration of the necessity for and morality of the founding of the KKK. He was probably the most pro-Confederacy President since Jefferson Davis.

Except a) Cheeto (luckily) is just too inept to get most of his craven agenda through. Dubya, on the other hand, was personally inept; but had a top-notch crew of log-rollers and Macchiavellis.

and b) there's been no 9/11, no Iraq/Aghani invasions (or the equivalent), or $20-trillion Wall Street collapse - yet.

Most of those caveats, of course, are owed simply to the fact that Cheeto has only been in office 7 months. By 2020, he may very well end making Dubya look like Bill Clinton.
