Pro-immigrant rally in Austin

... Capitol police estimated at the start of the rally that at least 400 people were at the Unity March Against Hate and To Defend DACA organized by Jolt, a Latino civic engagement organization. Organizers said the number grew by hundreds as the rally turned to a march later Saturday afternoon.

Jolt spokeswoman and an event organizer Tania Mejia said that, despite Latinos making up a large part of Texas’ population, state officials continue to push legislative and other action that hurts the community.

Mejia cited the Legislature’s passage of Senate Bill 4, the “sanctuary cities” ban, and Gov. Greg Abbott’s push for President Donald Trump to repeal the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program.

The program offers protection from deportation and work permits to some children of undocumented immigrants. Trump said last week that he expects to make a decision on the program by Tuesday ...
