From his Facebook post:
I've been to South Korea. It is a land with a long and difficult history. I've met the people. They are tough, resilient, and have been good friends of the United States. (I've also been to North Korea, arguably the most surreal and opaque society on Earth).
What must the South Koreans be thinking today in the wake of news of a powerful nuclear test by their unstable neighbor to the north? And more unexpectedly, what must they be thinking about the news that President Trump wants to tear up the trade deal between them and the United States? And then in a Tweet this morning Mr. Trump criticized the South Korean approach to the nuclear crisis as "appeasement."
In a complicated world we need friends. These are dangerous times in East Asia, and there appear to be many in the administration urging Mr. Trump to be careful in his dealings with South Korea. Meanwhile in Seoul, they must be wondering how much they can trust the United States. The common threat of North Korea would usually be the kind of crisis that brought friends and allies together. But there is nothing normal about Mr. Trump's posture on the world stage, and he seems eager to brandish tough talk and action as a wedge between the United States and a longtime ally.
