The guy sitting next to her is Dmitry Peskov, one of Putin's most trusted aides, who speaks excellent English and has served as a translator.

Your name was mentioned in the document request from the Senate Judiciary Committee to the lawyers of Paul Manafort and Donald Trump Jr. Why?
I think its there for the same reason that that photo keeps circulating without a single fact. There was no translator at the dinner. Putin came in very briefly. Maybe he was there for 10 or 15 minutes before he gave a speech in Russian. Nobody was introduced to anybody. My conversation was actually with the guy sitting next to me, a German diplomat.
THE DINNER TABLE IS SHOWN HERE, WITH THE DINERS IDENTIFIED.

"Stein did well enough to help Russia achieve its aims. Her vote totals in the crucial states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan were all greater than Clinton's margin of defeat, and arguably denied Clinton an Electoral College victory.)"
"RT's criticism of the U.S. election," said the report, "was the latest facet of its broader and longer-standing anti-U.S. messaging likely aimed at undermining viewers' trust in U.S. democratic procedures and undercutting U.S. criticism of Russia's political system. RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan recently declared that the United States itself lacks democracy and that it has 'no moral right to teach the rest of the world.'"
Jill Stein declined an NBC News request for comment."

(16,950 posts)to discuss that dinner beyond grudgingly answering minimal questioning about it.
I heard her one day contradicting herself in an interview, though. Can't find it now, but what she was questioned on was a misrepresentation of what she had previously said about it. I think it had to do with talking to Putin, but then she said there was no translator there.
She's a liar and a fraud. Can't wait to see the dirt on her exposed.

The way it reads to me, saying "there was no translator at the dinner" doesn't mean that there was nobody in the room who was bilingual or had ever been a translator. It means that nobody was serving in an official translator capacity for the event, meaning that nobody was translating Putin's 15 minutes speech, meaning she had no idea what he said.
Am I missing something?

Anyway, I haven't been able to track down the original photo published by a news outlet without the annotations. Let me know if you do.

NBC News used the cropped picture in its April story, but also included a photo of the ever affable Jill (snapping a souvenir picture of the event) seated next to the German "diplomat".

(16,950 posts)that pretty much confirms that Putin approves of the anti-USA programming that is put out by the likes of Thom Hartmann and his ilk on RT. If you are not anti-US, you aren't welcome in Putin's world. All those radio shows spread divisive messages about America that on some level meet Putin's needs.
No wonder Adam Schiff wants to get to the bottom of her Russia connections.

(90,645 posts)All those Americans were there, and afaik all of them took Russian money. There was at least one translator there; he just was not translating from Russian to English, was he? The Russians got a picture of all those Americans in the same room with Putin et al.
So Putin learned quite a bit from this exercise. One thing is: can a quid pro quo be established now and in the future? How much can the Russians get? What will the Americans want?
Another thing learned is: how many plausible American politicians and opinion makers are willing to deal with Putin? Easy does it, slowly make friends, establish trust, give money -- finally demand something in return.
Splashing money around is really easy for Russian oligarchs, and Putin controls them all. So the Trumps were groomed for years, weren't they? And finally, Putin got himself a potus who is beholden to him, bigly.
