The steamy, fiery summer of 2017 hit a new crescendo this weekend across the U.S. West, which is getting its hottest Labor Day weekend on record in many locationsand in some spots, the hottest weather ever observed. Overall, "this is the greatest statewide heat wave ever recorded in California, proclaimed WU weather historian Christopher Burt on Saturday night. Burt based his conclusion not only on the heats intensity but on its widespread nature well beyond Californias usual scorching locations. Even an escape to the cool Pacific shore was pretty much futile, as easterly downslope winds funneled scorching air from the interior into coastal sections that are normally mild and sometimes chilly even in midsummer. Readings also soared above 110°F across Californias Central Valley, although such heat is not quite so unusual for late summer in that area.

Expecting Rain
(811 posts)With blue skies all around, I was out gardening (Mad Dogs and Englishmen), I got rain soaked. Hard to discern from the perspiration soak.
Hot we are used to. Humid, tropical, monsoonal weather is unusual.

(111,237 posts)and now they'll go out to sea. Maybe a wandering shower will help douse some of those fires.
This summer has been a real stinker.
Expecting Rain
(811 posts)The rain must have been a patchwork as the sky was mostly blue.
Yesterday we woke up to white ash on our cars from the fire. We must be about 25 miles West and (slightly South) of the fire.
Strange weather.

(15,682 posts)like I have NEVER seen in the summer. It was almost frightening. Not the rain but the sign of what is to come.
It was one of those moments of absolute clarity.

(149,580 posts)And we are sweltering, in spite of a/c.
There was a power outage earlier, maybe an hour or two. In all the years we've lived here, I have never experienced weather like this.
Of course we're very lucky. We're not underwater, or living in the midst of any war or without food or shelter. I can't imagine how much worse it is for folks who are living in such conditions.
Expecting Rain
(811 posts)we spotted a large group of people dressed all in maroon (who somehow look completely out of place in Malibu) and when we got out I discovered they were all Texans out to see the Texas A&M game against UCLA.
I did my best to be a good ambassador and welcomed them to California, asked about their families, and offered well-wishes.
But yeah, having a home under water offers perspective when facing a tropical heatwave.

(11,447 posts)I live northern coast, summers are normally mid 60's to 70 at most and I mean most. It is never above 70 here and its been foggy overcast and cold like most of the summer. So to all of a sudden have 93 for 2 days with no air conditioning and with intense smoke from fires all over even here on coast we can't open windows so its a mess.
I'll take my fog back!!!

(51,584 posts)I put off my daytime chores/cooking to do at night when it would be cooler than the 99 degrees we had all day. It only dropped to 84 at 10:00 PM and as I did my cooking the temp went to 84 by midnight and 86 by 2:30 AM. I thought my thermometer was too close to the kitchen and that was the reason for the strange error. But then I looked up Weather Underground and I said, "Holy Shit! It is NOT me" and it was all over the area, even at the beach where my family lives. The past 5 years have been the hottest I have experienced since living here for over 30 years.

(51,584 posts)This week the Congress gets back from recess and I have my phone calls already organized and researched. Yesterday a total stranger took pictures of earrings I was wearing and I made (they are round with a picture of 45 behind bars and "lock him up" written across his ugly face). There are many people in CA who hate him with a passion.

(80,708 posts)what's left of the storm has been tracking West.. the upper "arm" is still high enough to pull hot air westward onto California, whereas under normal circumstances the state is cooled by incoming air off the Pacific.
It may be an oversimplification, but I'm sure they're related.

(9,524 posts)higher which is very unusual for Portland. Maybe we get a few days like that in a whole summer. And so many forest fires. Lots of forecasts of "hot, smoky" for days in a row. I've lost track of how many days that's been the forecast. Finally it's looking like a break on Thursday.
Last winter we had five ice storms in four weeks. Many winters we don't get any. Maybe two at the most.
