After LBJ courageously kicked the racists out of the Democratic party by signing the Civil Rights Act, the GOP embraced racists.

here is a cross-post from another thread - sorry i'm not here often and this place can be busy and scattered around. reposting here since it's kind of relevant

i'm not white btw - I can see why the rank and file whites are upset. their disaffection may have contributed to the outcome of the election. some of them mistakenly believe that the govt is over-legislating on issues that impede on their "traditional family values" beliefs (for social conservatives) - see Canadian bill C 16. apparently some university profs were being asked to allow usage of these gender pronouns in graded paperwork.

others may mistakenly believe that blacks have legal equality now, so any economic problems they have are their own fault. to a small extent they bring up issues worth discussing - welfare rates and entitlement spending. don't get me wrong, I don't want to cut welfare but I know two people personally who claim SSDI when they could probably work, so there is a little room for belt-tightening.

I would say that maybe 30% of the conservatives are really racist. furthermore I would say that some of those would change their opinion over time and interaction. for the most part I would say it's not race it's economics. yes there is police brutality, but it must be said that in a minority of those cases, citizens might not get shot if they weren't running or driving from the police.
