It is a very good rule of thumb.

In general, I think that Podesta really had little that broke that rule. However, some people corresponding with him did -- like the author of this NY Magazine article, I was impressed with Neera Tanden's opinions and agreed with them, but as an adviser to HRC she absolutely should not have put these words into email.

I assume they would never have been put into a more formal document and that she, like many people, did not treat email as seriously as she would have considered a campaign message, letter or document. Yet this is not new, I knew for years when I worked, that our email could be subpoenaed - and that was pre 1998.
