(5,611 posts)For years her critics (on the left) talked about her narcissism, and I used to think they were being unfair, etc But I think that narcissism became very clear during the election as she refused to acknowledge how her anti-Hillary antics could lead to something like this -- something which affects the lives of ordinary people who deserve better.

(42,210 posts)Sarandon and her ilk claimed there was no difference between Twirler and HRC. Oh wait, she actually said HRC would be worse.
I still hold a lifetime grudge against Ralph Nader.
Asshole like him, Jill Stein and those who support them are responsible for the mess we're in
Susan Calvin
(1,644 posts)But, nevertheless, I wholeheartedly agree with the lifetime grudge.
We can't afford spectacularly poor judgement, regardless of whether it actually made a difference in the immediate outcome.
It gave idiots ammunition, if nothing else.

You don't think that many people who think like us, politically, voted third party, stayed home or blanked the election?
I'm convinced they were a deciding factor.
Susan Calvin
(1,644 posts)Not the only factor, by a long shot. Rs and their ilk leave no stone unturned.

(1,095 posts)impacted by this twisted , despicable man sitting in the White House. Susan didn't have to support HRC, but she also didn't have to bash her and compare her to Trump. I will never "let this go." We literally had Nazis marching down the street with torches in 2017.. let that sink in. .. Now there's talk of a nuclear war. Nope..Not letting this go.

(90,202 posts)...and will NOT be forgotten or forgiven.
Maybe if she owned up to her mistake - but she hasn't and still acts like she's morally superior for never having backed Hillary.
She is white privilege and rich privilege personified. She wants us to think that she's just so damn principled about her progressivism ; but the reason she can decide not to budge is that all of Trump's evil will never touch her directly.
People like that can fuck off. When she advocates for so called 'revolution' do you imagine she'll be on the front lines of any issue?
Trump ends DACA and it has real effect on people. Trump attacks trans in the military and it has real effect on people. Trump pardons and empowers known racist sheriffs and it has real effect on people. Trump excites neo nazis and a peaceful protester dies... but none of that is of real consequence to someone like Susan Sarandon who actually argued this was the second best outcome because the nation would be shocked into drastic change. That's complete horseshit. It's like advocating that people should actively seek out cancer and invite it into their systems so that they can later be made pure by a possible, but not necessarily successful regimen of chemo.

CakeGrrl
(10,611 posts)Of course, mileage may vary, but on the whole, if a celebrity makes a consistently strong negative impression, it can overshadow their body of work despite their talent. For me, that includes (sticking to actors/actresses):
Bill Cosby (and no, I'm not equating odious political views with criminal allegations)
Jon Voight
James Woods
Robert Duvall
Susan Sarandon
Sure, she won an Oscar for "Dead Man Walking" and she was in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", but her lasting impression for many people is very likely to be as one of the higher-profile voices during the campaign who didn't think Trump would be any worse (or AS worse) than Hillary.
And it doesn't help her cause to have gotten into it with Dolores Huerta, a PROVEN labor activist, during the campaign.

(9,903 posts)Stand with Susan's "right not to support Hillary" and you get:
Republicans control the White House (Clinton was the Democrat, so the point is obvious)
Republicans control the Supreme Court (we got a justice Clinton would never have nominated)
Republicans control the majority of federal judge seats (check out the 8th circuit)
Standing with Susan is not a good strategy.
Susan Calvin
(1,644 posts)We had a system like most other current democracies.
We don't.
We have a binary, winner-take-all system. Plus the electoral college.
Do I want it changed? Yes, I do. Is it currently what it is? Yes, it is.
Anybody who does not choose the lesser of the evils in our unfortunate system is not, IMHO, facing reality.
And, yes, "lesser" implies only two choices.

(33,368 posts)Susan Sarandon and her ilk think if we'd kissed her ass we would have done better.
Anyone with a brain - Susan and her ilk don't qualify - might expect us to do worse.
It's easy for long term losers to announce that if only we were like them we'd be on the winning side. The only one who actually benefited from that attitude is a Klansman in the White House and the Nazis marching in the street.
Congratulations, you must be very, very, very, very proud.

(5,272 posts)and I think wrongly, that Trump was less likely to be interventionist overseas, and thus, to get us into a war. I don't think she ever suggested Trump would be better on immigration issues or any other issue under the sun.
Devastating disenfranchisement HAS been going on throughout the country before Trump. We actually really do need a wake-up call. Whether it was a good idea to let Trump be that wakeup call is certainly a verdict that is still out, since, thankfully, he hasn't irreparably broken the US yet. I didn't take that bet myself, but there's nothing inconsistent with her standing with the dreamers even if you hate her or that she voted for Stein.
kcr

(5,272 posts)us not addressing certain things in our politics, the popularity of monsters like donald trump were going to be inevitable while we continued to let the cancer fester in the shadows. They advocated for a very serious virus that would get us on the examining table, or rather, they advocated against the pain killers that might prevent us from recognizing the symptoms until too late.
There is no question that that might be a mistake. And for those who think everything has been getting incrementally better overall-I am not one of those even though I couldn't support this radical therapy-it must certainly look like insanity or contemptible. I just think there is room to allow for their motives being genuine, even if you disagree with their assessment of the sickness, or their prescription.
