That's an important, relevant and critical point often lost within dogmatic privilege.

Another is pets, for many of us, o ur pets are family. I would NEVER leave my home for somewhere that would not take my 2 dogs. I have kennels for them, they are highly trained, but they are not welcome at many shelters.

I understand why some people are scared. Some are leaving a home they shared with their spouse who passed, they feel leaving it to the hurricane is disrespectful to their loved one.

There is a lot of psychological stuff going on. Now, if none of these things apply and you just think "hey I survived the last one and they lied" you are an idiot.

Teenagers in the surf and on storm drains on their bikes and laughing. No pets involved. Just thrill seeking.

My mom felt security was not adequate last time. She is riding this one out on the 5th floor of an 8 story condo. It is on the beach just north of Daytona. I don't like it, but she has few alternatives.

I actually lost a friend who insisted that the victims of Katrina more or less deserved their fate because they were too stupid to get out of the way. Despite my efforts to point out that they had no money, no credit cards, no gas and/or a vehicle to get to a hotel or other refuge -- IOW poor, she kept up the blame. Months later she had jumped on the jeebus bandwagon and I knew all was lost. There are a thousand reasons not to evacuate.

also, when you are poor or living paycheck to paycheck you are very hesitant to leave all you have, knowing you don't have the means to replace

Going out and seeing the wind/waves before/after the storm is something many people do, especially teenagers like in the video.

The storm isn't on them, it's just the precursor waves. I'm sort of jealous of their excitement.

In Pinellas county, shelters not open yet and, as of this morning, no evacuation order. So you raja but evacuating and going to shelters as if this is an option for everyone, everywhere.

And my 90 year old mother is in no condition to just pick and head out. So this sort of advice may be well meant but not always possible to do
