Bannon: Catholic churches 'need illegal aliens'

BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 09/07/17 08:04 AM EDT

Former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon in a new interview slammed the Catholic Church for its stance on immigration, saying leaders “need illegal aliens to to fill the churches."

Bannon told "60 Minutes" that the Catholic Church has been “terrible about” immigration when Charlie Rose noted that Cardinal Timothy Dolan in New York opposed President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“You know why? Because [they have been] unable to really, to come to grips with the problems in the church, they need illegal aliens. They need illegal aliens to fill the churches. It’s obvious on the face of it,” Bannon said.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday that the administration would phase out the program, which temporarily blocked the deportation of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as minors, giving Congress six months to act. Bannon in the interview also argued that the Catholic Church has an “economic interest” in "unlimited illegal immigration."

This might actually be a smart move for Bannon -- deciding to go back to being a not-too-small frog in a small white supremacy pond. More likely, he's just flinging poop because that's what he does.

I sometimes read religious forums because I like learning about beliefs and I stumbled across this site called Catholic Answers that was so conservative, it would have made Free Republic look sane. Anyway, one of the things these people always stressed was following church teaching and the authority of the Pope. Of course, this was during the reign of the conservative Benedict. I'm vaguely curious to know how those folks feel about Francis.

Nuance, exceptions to blanket rules, and a lack of absolutism can be a difficult thing to grasp.

Both our statements most likely contain the same approximate amount of sincerity.

. . .for media to now be giving coverage to someone in the media?

He's not a WH insider any longer. He got fired. He's yesterday's news. Now, major media is fauning over a guy who is competition with them for clicks.

Seems stupid.

The Church is wanting to keep illegal immigrants around for economic reasons as the brain eating Mr Bannon thinks is really ridiculous as serving people who are poorly paid is not a money maker but actually cost money. I would say that Bannon is a stupid doofus but he is not- he is playing the stupid doofi (attempt at a Latin plural of doofus).

A lot of the Texas Republican Party's voting strength comes from middle-class and upper-middle class Catholics of European descent. Those Catholics supply a good chunk of the leadership of the anti-abortion movement and the GOP's cadre.

I wonder how they'd feel if they couldn't ignore such remarks anymore? Those people have gone on the warpath against Democrats for saying far, far less offensive behavior.

Can we hope that they'd feel sufficiently offended enough to sit out 2018 and 2020?

Or if Donohue will keep to his usual habits of ignoring attacks on the practices and doctrine of the Catholic Church in favor of throwing hissy fits about some gay cross dresser or other putting on a nun's habit at a drag show.

I'm sure some of the right-wing Fundamentalist and Evangelicals have got some revolting videos and print diatribes they're just itching to release. It'll be interesting to see how willing the rural conservative Catholic precincts and counties that have reliably voted Republican these last few elections will be willing to turn out for Donnie and the Rethuglies in 2018 and 2020.

They hate the Catholic church because they are all inclusive and they are not shy about castigating a wealthy person for ignoring their role to help the poor.
