"We had no idea he would stab us in the back."
How long before we hear this from the Democratic leadership?
Republicans did not want to vote on raising the debt. Many of the right-wing radio hosts were blasting the idea. It went against their "conservative principles", they said.
Trump gave them a way out. They are happy as shit that they won't have to do the heavy lifting on increasing the debt limit. Democrats should understand what is in play here.
However, the leadership was smart enough to ask for a 3-month increase in the debt limit, mostly to take care of the disasters. It also showed that they were willing to work with the majority Party. They do not wish to shut down our government.
Republicans wanted an 18-month increase, which was an impossible demand from Paul Ryan. Democrats could not go along with that demand, otherwise they would have no leverage for future debates.
Democrats should not forget, Donald Trump cannot be trusted. He lies.
Go slowly, Democrats.
