Last thing you do before the storm - have a nice shower and shampoo. Appreciate the water
That is all.

Malaise, how are things in Jamaica?
malaise
(268,949 posts)We expect heavy rain particularly on the North Coast this time around.
Remember they say another one will roll of the African coast in nine days. So far we've been lucky. Reality is that it may or may not be this year but we will be hit again. It is where we live - hurricane alley - a huge space

(14,854 posts)Cubes melt too fast. You'll be glad you did - an ice cold drink is great for the morale when the AC is out. We freeze some in clean soda and juice bottles, then it counts as bottled drinking water, too.

(63,837 posts)Jamaica is safe nice to hear. Well we are holding our breath here in Bermuda, ocean is rocking and rolling, but we are no strangers to hurricanes, we have structures that are pretty sound. We are looking at Jose and saying No way Jose go away!!!

(111,247 posts)when he'd been without power for 22 days, he'd run out of his favorite tipple and the grog shop was closed due to the power outage.
He had a half gallon of the stuff stashed after that, found it after he died.

(11,949 posts)But once the emergency is over and the days and days without AC in Central Florida kick in, Bourbon becomes a necessity.
Lord, I do not look forward to that. And since we all live in houses designed for AC you cannot even funnel the breeze thru the homes like my grand parents houses did. And most people do not even know what a sleeping porch is!
Glad you dodged this one. Looks like I am in the crosshairs!

(39,343 posts)When we lose power it tends to stay out for days, so we're going to try to pre-chill the house.
Laundry is #1 on my list for tomorrow as well as packing an "oh shit" bag in the event that we have to dash.
Next is definitely a shower and shave after that.

Water will keep flowing, you may not be able to drink it but cold showers in the heat are the only good thing.

(268,949 posts)That was a mess - we found a pipe with running water next to the Bob Marley statue near the stadium.
We'd go to the beach - have a swim and eat fresh fish. Then we'd head for the statue with our own shower curtains and hose.
We'd fill up containers as well.

(2,212 posts)I know what you mean though, not the best situation.
I am hoping they let me back on the island soon after this passes, so I can jump in the ocean if the water is not running... I stocked up so I shouldn't need anything.

(2,302 posts)We evacuated last year for Matthew, and our house came through just fine. I have been getting everything ready in case we have to go, but I'm hoping we can stay here. Only issue is windows. Hubby is going to review and probably cover some of them tomorrow.
Our house is on the same grid as the hospital, police HQ, and fire dept, so it's usually back on fast. Plenty of food, water, and ice...and a book.
I picked a hell of a time to develop anxiety/depression. At least it seems to have made me more efficient.

(14,854 posts)the water stopped running in the middle of his shower. He had to rinse off with swimming pool water and we didn't get to fill the tub. Everybody had the same idea at the same time, I guess. We didn't see running water again until a week or so after the storm, maybe longer, I don't remember exactly. Take your shower early, clean the tub and fill it up. Better to have it and not need it than the opposite.

(10,495 posts)I am about to go for my bottle water shower again! That stuff is COLD! To get through it I remind myself how much worse off I could be. So many friends and co-workers have lost it all. My father-in-law was able to wade into his house again today for the first time since we rescued what we could with my canoe as the water from the Neches river was rising in the house fast. I was so glad he got his I-Pad today and it was ok. I had bagged it up in a freezer bag but set it on a floating couch to help him when a shelf fell over and forgot it. I knew I sealed it good but the house went all the way under for days. Thank you Ziplock!!!
To those in Florida, thousands who I represented in the BP oil spill there, I hope you are at least as fortunate as I am with Harvey! Be patient, be kind, help others and it will not be nearly as bad as it could be otherwise! Other people see you helping and it pushes them to do the same!

(10,495 posts)I feel bad because I know what is coming for Floridians and anyone else hit by this bad hurricane. Since power companies, adjusters, rescue etc are all over here they will have to wait longer for many things.
Rita was a month after Katrina and we call it the "Forgotten Hurricane" because they wouldn't even talk about us after she hit. I think Irma is too big to forget but they will still have to wait for things.
