1. Water does not have to be bottled. You can buy water containers and fill them with tap water. You may have more around the house than you think.
2. Get a plastic sheet to line the tub. Then you can fill your tub with water without it leaking out. You can use this water to flush toilets and for basic cleaning if the water does goes out.
3. Ziploc-like plastic bags (large and small) can be used to protect papers and other valuables. Also, you can fill them 3/4 full of water and fill your freezer with them. It will keep the refrigerator colder.
4. If you have a pool, throw loose patio furniture in the pool, so it doesnt blow around and become dangerous debris.
5. Go through and snap photos or take videos of all your stuff so you will have it for possible insurance claims later. Don't just have the photos on your phone. Email them to yourself. Place the originals in sealed bags or plastic bins. Make sure they are in a high and dry palce. You can even put important documents in the dishwasher, no water should get in there. You can even get large plastic boxes. If you put your valuables, photos, and papers in plastic bags inside the boxes, they will likely be okay.
6. Do your laundry this week.
7. Be sure to protect your windows facing neighbors. Check your yard and theirs for any possible loose items or weak trees and branches.
8. Freeze regular tap water for pets, cleaning or drinking in tupperware-type containers. REMEMBER to leave a small bit of space between the top of the water & the lids so the ice expands but doesn't crack the container.
9. Start using up your perishables to make more room for ice in the freezer.
10. Fill up all vehicles and check tires as well as oil.
11. Get cash from the ATM, at least enough to get you gas to get out of town. Call your bank if you plan on leaving the state so they don't freeze your card for out-of-area "suspicious" transactions.
12. Get pet and livestock food supplies. Have records in case you need to shelter your pets at a storm-safe facility.
13. Have evacuation plans and share them with family members so they know where you're headed.
14. Secure all firearms and ammunition properly.
15. Place old rags and beach towels on your windowsills. Even with the best windows and shutters, water seeping from the wind pressure happens.
16. If you don't already have your hurricane supplies, you might want to get them now. Shelves are already empty in most places.
