Elgin Community College rattled by DACA demise

Rafael Guerrero
Elgin Courier-News

... "There is fear around them. They don't know what's going to happen, if they're going to go back to their home country — that's what he's been talking about," said Gonzalez, a third-year ECC student. "All these students are possibly going back to their countries, countries that they haven't been in (for years). They don't know these countries. That's so cruel, they haven't been in those environments" ...

Student services director Amybeth Maurer said some of affected students have already visited her. One student, she said, told her how they were feeling "homeless" after the announcement ...

"Even before DACA, undocumented students were still pursuing higher education, even without knowing if there's that reward at the end," she said. "To have a dream you're willing to put on the line and fight for every day, not knowing what happens next ... that's a resilience and a grit, a perseverance to a dream."

rally in San Diego Tues night brought me to tears and made me feel sick in my stomach. I am thoroughly disgusted with this country and its citizens. If you are not 100% American Indian than you are an immigrant. This is something that the majority of anti immigrant idiots never want to admit. This country is all the dreamers know. They often do not even know the language or anyone in the country their parents came from. They all followed the law, are not criminals, attend school, are employed and pay taxes, or serve in the armed forces. I bet half of the people who want them to leave can't say that!

I am glad our school superintendent told the public that no ICE officials are allowed on school sites. She spoke at the rally and she also sent notices to the teachers and parents. The district is huge (5th largest in the country) and on the border with Mexico and we have many Asian dreamers here too. Everyone made a pledge on Tues night to stand up in our everyday lives whenever we see or hear negative treatment directed toward the dreamers. We all must do this everyday and where ever we confront ignorance.
