General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHas there been any discussion of Trump possibly changing political party (again) ?
Let's look at the facts:
He was a Democrat, once upon a time.
Right now, he is considered to be a Republican In Name Only (RHINO). He hates the
Republican leadership and they hate him.
He is incapable of loyalty to anything or anyone. Today's friend is tomorrow's enemy.
He doesn't care if he throws the government into chaos.
He will say or do anything IF it serves his self-interest.
He is not hesitant to change political positions, and he has no core set of political values.
If he switched party affiliation,
1) it would become the focus of media attention for months and distract from serious issues.
2) he would be "the first" US president in history to change party while in office (he loves being first)
3) it would throw a monkey wrench into the Russia investigation and any likely impeachment procedings.
4) it would confuse the Dems and other detractors, and throw the resistance movement into chaos.
5) he would be playing both side against each other.
I noticed he and Pence were sporting blue-colored ties at the announcement -- not the mile-long red one.
Is it a secret signal ??

(9,955 posts)...no (or nyet) to him running. I would not expect him to win anything.

(3,920 posts)in this country, for a political party to exclude an individual? If he registers as a Democrat, then he is a Democrat, no?
Mike Nelson
(9,955 posts)...but his state - NY - would have some guidelines about registration. There are too many mischief makers registering and re-registering. I'd say a good guideline would be, "If you were elected President as a Republican, you need to wait 25 years before re-registering as a Democrat" (especially if you're a Trump family member).

(15,237 posts)No Pence will not be a secret Democrat. No matter party affiliation Trump is a crook. Trump has no ideology.

(844 posts)The Repugs would feel betrayed and some would probably join the Dems , who would not be fooled and still want him OUT. Just need a few R's to want it to happen and then we would vote en mass to end this turd.

(844 posts)I'm convinced that among the people who still support him the largest group are people whose only real 'issue' they care about is hating Democrats and Liberals

(51,311 posts)This "argument," this claim, this disingenuous "Trump's not really a Republican" is a bunch of PIG FECAL MATTER.

(94,541 posts)The only value in switching Parties is if it brings you voters you didn't have before. As much as Joe Scarborough and other like to claim he's "really a Democrat", he wouldn't be on a stronger political footing if he re-registered.

(36,926 posts)At that point his impeachment and conviction would be pretty much guaranteed. The hypocrite might flip to, in his demented mind, save his sorry arse.

(544 posts)His is a Narcissistic Megalomaniac who holds many grudges and whose only true loyalties are making Wall Street more money.
He'll say whatever is necessary and pander to whatever group is the most beneficial to his corporatist cause at the moment because he has no core principles. He knows people have short memories and he is a veteran at media manipulation. He has been a democrat when it served him, a republican when it benefitted him, and an "independent" when neither of the two offered a better foothold. In the recent election he pandered heavily to the republican base (that has deep-seeded racism and xenophobia) because that was the only way for someone with no political achievements to climb to the top of the GOP ticket.
I actually do not believe he is any more racist/xenophobic than any other wealthy old white guy. He's quite the showman though. As a wealthy businessman, he already had a lion's share of corporate votes locked in and being a pop media icon he knows how to play a crowd and make waves... so all he really had to do was play to the poor white racists in the southern states and harp on lost jobs and immigration to drum up hatred in the rustbelt flyover states.
And when that wasn't enough, he colluded with foreign interests. "Winning" at costs. He said and did what he had to do because morals and principles are less important to him than wealth, power and admiration. He's extremely wealthy and arguably the most powerful man on the planet now... and it's slowly killing him to learn firsthand that someone with no moral standards or true character can't buy or mandate admiration. Maybe granddaddy Trump didn't give him enough hugs as a kid or something.
I don't think he hates Obama because he's black in the least. He hates Obama and tears down Obama's accomplishments because people loved Obama. He knows he can never have that no matter how rich or powerful he becomes. Trump knows that even among his loyal trumpists, they don't love him... they don't even like him ... they only like hearing the fucked up shit he says. And even then, he knows he only says it to pander to them so they're only liking someone who isn't even his true self.

(14,531 posts)He doesn't care who hands it to him. If Dems win the senate with a filibuster proof majority he will sign any legislation put in front of him, for the win. Him siding with Democrats on the debt ceiling shows that.
He can register to any party. Just as Dem leaders can opt not to give him funds to campaign with.
