(my daughter is non-verbal), and the exaggerated facial expressions are encouraged. If you think about it, we speakers use rising and falling tones, varying volume, all kinds of non-word yet aural (if that's the word I want) emphases in our spoken communication. Facial expressions are needed in ASL to communicate fully the meaning of the ideas being signed.

It does fascinate.

Studied ASL for 3 years in college and considered a career as an interpreter. Facial expressions are part of the language! I have several profoundly deaf extended family members.
