More than 50 animals found tethered to trees in Palm Beach County as Irma approaches.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Officials are calling it animal cruelty like they've never seen before.

As Hurricane Irma’s outer bands inch closer to Palm Beach County, animal control officers said they are hustling to rescue abandoned animals.
And these aren't pets who are just being left inside, Director of Animal Care Diane Suave said.

“They are left in a yard, in a pen they cannot escape from or tethered to trees or poles,” she said.

Palm Beach County Animal Care reports animal control officers have rescued 49 dogs and two cats in the last 48 hours.

Dogs can swim! Hell, even cats can swim, though they might not like it much.

Why would you tie up an animal or leave it in a carrier where it will likely drown?

as that picture you put up shows they hate it. The way cats bodies can move makes it easier for them than humans and dogs to maneuver to get up or into something to keep them safe. It is cruel and inhumane to force them to have to do this though. I must admit I laughed because of the expression on that cats face.

why? why would anybody be this cruel? i can only imagine a disturbed person who had possibly gathered way too many animals and with more on his or her plate than he or she was equipped to deal with. i'm happy the animals were rescued.

at work we rescued a puppy who had been left in the forest. it took a couple weeks as she would not let a human anywhere near her, and we finally trapped her in a cage. she was only about 3 months old. now she's happily at home at my former boss's, fully socialized. a pox on the people who would even consider abandoning a puppy in a forest. she would not have lived much longer by the time we caught her.

some people do not have a heart for animals the way most of us do. they dump litters in trash cans and rivers. they tie dogs to poles in rising floods. i don't get it.

mobile home and in her vehicle she had something like one very large dog, Two cats , a couple of rabbits, I think three birds ( one was a beautiful Cockatoo) and her husband was following in their car with two other dogs. My heart sure is with them, they are the people who are true pet owners. She said they were evacuating for the safety of their babies, they felt they could ride out the storm but were afraid for their furry/feathered kids.
