With talk of Ron Pauls connection to white supremacy/hate groups on the forefront, the NY Times recent article on the matter highlights some striking similarities between their collective ideology. The American Free Press which issued venomous books such as, The Invention of the Jewish People and March of the Titans: A History of the White Race, is joined by other extremist groups such as the Militia of Montana and the racists at website, Stormfront, in their support of Ron Paul for president. Their reasons vary semantically, but their message is all the same: Apparently they feel Paul represents their values:
Don Black, director of the white nationalist Web site Stormfront, said in an interview that several dozen of his members were volunteering for Mr. Pauls presidential campaign, and a site forum titled Why is Ron Paul such a favorite here? has no fewer than 24 pages of comments. I understand he wins many fans because his monetary policy would hurt Jews, read one.
Far-right groups like the Militia of Montana say they are rooting for Mr. Paul as a stalwart against government tyranny.
Mr. Pauls surprising surge in polls is creating excitement within a part of his political base that has been behind him for decades but overshadowed by his newer fans on college campuses and in some liberal precincts who are taken with his antiwar, anti-drug-laws messages.
The white supremacists, survivalists and anti-Zionists who have rallied behind his candidacy have not exactly been warmly welcomed. I wouldnt be happy with that, Mr. Paul said in an interview Friday when asked about getting help from volunteers with anti-Jewish or anti-Black views.
But he did not disavow their support. If they want to endorse me, theyre endorsing what I do or say it has nothing to do with endorsing what they say, said Mr. Paul, who is now running strong in Iowa for the Republican nomination.
Sounds like a reasonable rationale, but taking a closer look, it appears that Pauls affiliation with such groups may be more along the lines of solidarity:

Let's all get on board the Ron Paul Train!

(37,326 posts)some threads here: Mr. Pauls calls for the end of the Federal Reserve system, a cessation of aid to Israel and all other nations and an overall diminishment of government power have natural appeal among far-right, niche political groups. Aides say that much of the support is unsolicited and that it is unfair to overlook the larger number of mainstream voters now backing him.
But a look at the trajectory of Mr. Pauls career shows that he and his closest political allies either wittingly or unwittingly courted disaffected white voters with extreme views as they sought to forge a movement from the nether region of American politics, where the far right and the far left sometimes converge.

(37,326 posts)It's sad that some "liberals" vocally support him STILL.

(221 posts)Even Reagan disavowed the Klan's endorsement in 1980!

(5,213 posts)That's what I think. I think he is strategically courting the racist, anti-Semite vote in the hopes of sweeping the South. He does well in Iowa and New Hampshire and takes South Carolina he will be THE alternative to Romney.

(20,043 posts)sad that I'm not.
People on DU are supporting/defending people that make excuses and prop Paul up.
Ron Paul is a racist, homophobic, bigot.
FRP!!

(37,326 posts)Those supposed liberal Dems. who support him knowing all this must hate Obama more than they love themselves.

Ron Paul was recently photographed with Don Black, director of the white nationalist Web site Stormfront, and his son, Derick

(1,487 posts)he will never be the nominee. Also--his supporters are very vocal and willing to waste their tiny mental resources repeating his nonsense. Remember--to some-he is a breath fresh air. But upon a moment's consideration-he has very little that will appeal to the nation.

(37,326 posts)And then "progressives" like Glenn Greenwald will be out there trying to convince Dems. to vote for HIM instead of Obama.

(31,454 posts)That would be great, and we could do some serious "weeding out".
P.S.: I got an email that one DU Icon & "activist" has been tweeting his intentions to come out for RP in the near future. I'll let you guess who that might be.
jenmito
(37,326 posts)that I know who that might be, and I think there are quite a few people here who might know who that might be, too. There are many posts pro-Paul, so it shouldn't be a surprise if/when it happens. The "weeding out" will be very welcome.

(31,454 posts)Count me out. But, I just heard a panelist on Rev. Al's show say that there's a growing possibility that Ron Paul will launch a third party campaign. Reportedly, he's really upset at the personal nature of the attacks coming from his opponents, and since he won't be running for the House under the Repub brand, the likelihood grows stronger that he will indeed go 3rd party. And I say, GO FOR IT, RON!
jenmito
(37,326 posts)And I heard that on Al's show yesterday, too. I hope he DOES, because although there will be the Glenn Greenwalds of the country who urge people to vote for Paul, the majority of those who vote for him will be RWers, racists, etc. It will make Obama's win easier.
