My wife's sister and her husband live in a Cape Coral home right across the street from the "Hootchy-Kootchy" river. They evacuated to another house on higher ground before Irma hit. This morning, they drove over to their own home. No water damage at all. No roof damage, either, from the high winds. The only damage that occurred was to their backyard fence, which was lifted up in one section by the roots of a fallen small tree. There is also a rather large rain puddle in the backyard.
Cape Coral is just to the west of Ft. Myers, in Lee County. Apparently, the storm surge was not high enough for the river to rise enough to reach their home. It's good news for them, and they expect power to be restored sometime today. Irma jogged over to the East, just enough to spare Cape Coral from greater damage. I do not have any information about Ft. Myers to the east, however.
That's one good news story from Florida. I know there are many stories that are not as good, and I hope the recovery throughout that region goes smoothly, but I know that many will return to severely-damaged homes and businesses.

(32,633 posts)I'm glad your family made it through OK.
I think the surge was a lot higher in Miami having to do with tides and wind direction. On the news I saw water about 5 feet deep in the city streets.

(146,286 posts)I wouldn't like living in Florida. I detest heat and humidity. However, the Thomas Edison Estate Museum there is very interesting to visit. I hope it wasn't damaged.
I expected their home to have flooded for sure, due to its proximity to the river. I'm sure glad that didn't happen.

(56,828 posts)my parents have a place in Naples just to the south of Ft Myers. The news they got from people that live there year-round is that there is extensive damage to the complex - lots of windows blown out, roof damage and close to 100% of the carports destroyed. There are a few hundred condos in the complex, so I don't have an individual report on their place but they did have hurricane windows installed several years back, so hopefully that saved them.

(51,311 posts)notice that we'd need another$20k to hook up to utilities, that was it. I knew I'd never leave PA, anyway.
Though I do wish Sanibel Island was here!

(146,286 posts)I wouldn't live there, due to storms and Florida's heat and humidity, but my sis-in-law and her husband like it. We only visit them in the winter, though. I generally go fishing there during our visits. I've yet to fish off the Sanibel Pier, though. Maybe next time.

(27,801 posts)Their street is a river, with people canoeing down it. They live in a one-story house, and they are not wealthy. They have three kids on the cusp of college (luckily, the oldest will probably earn a tennis scholarship). I worry for them.

(1,089 posts)They were going to have a grand opening of a studio and teaching center last weekend. Hope it made it through okay.

(146,286 posts)Apparently, they have delayed the grand opening and haven't yet returned. I imagine they'll post something about how the place fared in the next day or to on their FB page.
