What Ending DACA Means for Tech and the American Dream

... The revocation of DACA represents the end of a political consensus that goes back decades even within the GOP regarding the treatment of the children of illegal immigrants and even Trump’s own statements on the matter.

Revoking DACA stands in the starkest opposition to everything I have dedicated my life to: bringing people together from wildly diverse backgrounds and making it easier for them to communicate, conduct business, and pave a path in the future. My company, TransPerfect, has thrived in large part because of the diversity of its workforce, and not solely in its translation work. We staff internationally across every sector of our business, from IT to administration to the nitty-gritty of translation itself, pulling from an enormous and rich global talent pool – and it dismays me to see the current anti-immigration fervor targeting some of our most brilliant and talented young minds.

The American Dream, such as it ever existed, has been that everyone gets a fair shot. It doesn’t guarantee anyone success, but the underlying assumption is that if you live in America, you get a chance to succeed. That guarantee has driven some of the tech industry’s biggest players, as talent from across the world streamed to our shores to collaborate, innovate, and raise the bar.
