A Pizza Hut told Irma-fleeing employees they could be punished for skipping shifts
By Maura Judkis | September 11 at 2:23 PM

A manager of one Pizza Hut in the path of Hurricane Irma threatened to discipline workers who evacuated for the storm outside of a designated time frame — and the brand has come under fire on social media for the “shameful” policy.

A photo began circulating on Twitter of a memo posted for employees in one Jacksonville Pizza Hut location, with an explicit list of instructions for employees.

“To all Team members,” the memo begins, before laying out a policy that dictates that employees cannot evacuate more than 24 hours before the storm and must return within 72 hours. “Failure to show for these shifts, regardless of reason, will be considered a no call/no show and documentation will be issued,” it reads. “After the storm, we need all TM’s available to get the store up and running and serve our communities as needed.”

Evacuating in the last 24 hours before a storm can be a risky move. Supplies and gas may have dwindled by then, and traffic can be a nightmare. “If you do it later, you may be caught in a flood of traffic trying to leave the area,” Miami Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez said Wednesday night. “You may find yourself in a car during a hurricane, which is not the best place to be.”

It's really the franchise owner who loses the most. Pizza Hut has 15000 locations worldwide. Even if 100 closed for a week, it wouldn't affect their bottom line.

I think if this kind of warning were sent out by corporate, they would be looking at lawsuits.

Internet witch hunts are very 2015.

This person seems like an a-holes. Many folks are. Waffle House is lionized for similar conduct.

Our Pizza Hut has had the same waitress for thirty years. They have the best salad bar by far. Not all Huts are equal. Quality, cleanliness, attitude is different at each one Ours is great.

blew out windows and damaged roof the pizza hut is in a small strip center, 50 close homes had tornado damage.

That pizzahut is about 1/4 mile away, sat in that same "red tornado box" for about 3 hours that Saturday night,10 inches plus of rain over 8 hours, was just 'lucky' not to flood or strong-winds/tornado (so damn close!)

The pizza employees were happy to be back at work, the store was very busy- they even had limited delivery up and running Monday.

and their products ARE GARBAGE....

Anyone who grew up on New York or Chicago pizza knows this...

What every employee of that franchise should do is QUIT. NOT SHOW UP 72 hours later or 500 and 72 hours later..screw the owner. Let them make their cardboard crap themselves. FUCK PIZZA HUT.

They only pay minimum wages to their workers, so in the aftermath there will be TONS and TONS of minimum wage jobs open for the workers in Florida.

I urge every kid, (or working adult) to say"Screw Pizza Hut"...find something elsewhere.....you should have multiple opportunities from small businesses looking to rebuild...

I can say I don't see much difference in this pizza forced internment as with the Republican war mongers use the draft to force the lower income people to fight their wars for them with the draft.
